I've got a 2008 S penny that's got a wide AM... it's pretty shiney too. Is it real? Its thicker than any other penny I have but it still weighs 2.6 . From what I know, theres not supposed to be any wide AM pennies after 92.. right?? .. it's in pretty bad shape tho, but all comments and information is appreciated. 20200222_204130.jpg 20200222_204119.jpg 20200222_204150.jpg

Your 2008-S is an impaired proof. (A proof that has circulated.)
You can look it up but sometimes the proof Wide or Close AMs are the opposite
of what the normal business strikes are.
And so it's probably normal for that coin.

Yea if its proof then it is normal... how do I know if it is proof for sure?

All cents minted at San Francisco (S) were proofs. You can check the red book.

1968-1974 S cents were made as business strikes and proofs.
1909-1955 the S cents were business strikes.

@Michael K is correct. It's an impaired proof. The last business strike Lincoln cent struck at San Francisco was 1974. (1975 and later are all proof). It just surprises me that there's not even a hint of luster on that coin.

It's an impaired proof as it's only minted in proof but it has been circulated.

I believe when determining if it is wide or not, you also need to look at the distance between the M and E. As in your example, the distance is the same.
    There for not a wide a m.

You have posted enough times to know that you could have easily done a little research and found out what a proof and close/wide AM's are plus the relative years. No offense is intended, but you could have looked it up with the references others have already given you.

Incorrect.. That is definitely a Wide AM.
You only look at the distance between the A and the M.. That's why they are called Wide and Close AM

    A photography tip:
Just a hint if you crop your photo's and do away with all the background your pictures will be easier to view.

I would go ahead and give it a acetone bath for awhile.... it hard to tell on some of those spot if it is gunk or carbon spots....

    Keeper definitely!!!

Most of it is gunk.. is nail polish a bad alternative to acetone? Lol

What!! No!! Use 100% acetone! Don’t use that crap... you should wait!!! Don’t do it... just put it a 2x2 for now and enjoy it!!

Yes, it contains more addivities than gasoline. You need industrial strength acetone. Very pure with no ill affects. Nail polish will eat the surface off of any coin.
