I've been wanting to get a piece of velvet fabric for my "coin show type" display case. I have been putting it off since the fabric store is a 45 mile round trip. Well next weekend is my annual coin sell off at a yard sale at my daughter's house.
Last year I sold $354 worth of coins but one was a $205 CC Morgan.
Anyway today I drove to the store and picked out a nice dark blue velvet cloth. I wanted it custom cut so that's the reason I went there. Well they can only cut on the inch marks, no half inch cuts. And they can only cut it one way so I have to cut it the other way. They don't even cut it, they make a little nick with the sissors and then rip the cloth. Geez was I ticked off. The darn piece of velvet cost $13.89. Add to that a couple gallons of gas expense. I was sort of fuming the whole way home about another wrong decision. Then I pulled out my change and there was a 1935 Mercury dime!
Maybe a kind of message to just shut up and be happy. No I'm not driving back another 45 miles to ask see what else is in the cash register drawer.
And yes the dark blue velvet does look good in the aluminum display case.

That's a sweet circulation find, congrats! I'm sorry to hear that your trip was a bit disappointing...but I'm sure that makes it a little better. :D

Any chance of pics of the display?

Not done cutting the velvet. Darn store is supposed to cut it to exact measurements but they wiggled out of that. I did trial fit the cloth and arranged a couple rows of silver on it. It sure does look nice. Hope it is stimulating enough to boost sales.

Actually I have two display cases. One is a rather large [heavy] natural pine case that I got at a flea market for $20. Talked the guy down from $25 and he threw in the contents- old jewelry, nice stapler, several pair sunglasses and sunglasses with a hole drilled in the middle of each lens. I figure they were used on Halloween night so kids could see where they were going. Also in the case were
other flea market odds and ends. That one came with green felt lining the bottom.
But the one I am working on now is a small modern aluminum case with a handle like you see at coin shows. I almost bought a brand new one for $60 up at Brimfield.
But I waited and saw this at another flea market marked $35. So it has 2 scratches in the glass top and has no key to lock it. Also one of the closing clasps is missing. Someone probably broke the tab off trying to get into the case without the key. Anyway I offered $25 and the guy said NO. I said it's no good without a key and started to walk away. He says OK $25 it is.
I got it home and had trouble trying to open it. My God I bought a locked case with no key is what I thought. But then I figured out how to open it. Inside was a .925 silver earing shaped into a snake with an emerald colored eye.
My plan was to set up at some coin shows up in Massachusetts. But dammit they want $70 for table rental. Can you imagine how many nice coins I'd have to sell just to clear the seventy bucks?
I also bought a couple of folding portable tables.
So here I sit with 2 coin cases. Going to try a yard sale featuring coins, and try to peddle off lots of world coins too. Putting together a few box lots for kids- IHC, Buffalo nickels, and a sprinkling of world coins.
Have a gazillion starter sets of US stuff in Whitman folders.
I won't put out much slabbed stuff cause I figure the clientelle will be mostly cheapskates!
Spent $12 for an ad in the weekly flyers. Yeah I'll have to get some photos up soon.

Good find.!!! A 35 Merc is extremely rare for a coin found in circulation. Congrats.

I figure some old lady cashed in her piggy bank to buy some fabric. Usually I look through my change when I get to the car but didn't this time. If I had seen that Merc you bet I would have marched right back into the store.
