What's going on here? Where a "1" is suppose to be in the date looks nothing like it should.

Xperfectx Forgive me, I am new here and curious.

I found this in a massive bag of wheat pennies. Lincoln's muzzle is sheared clear off and the date appears to be rearranged by way of the same mechanism that took his chin, mouth and nose. Is this an error, post mint damage or a bit of both?

    probably 99%+ post mint damage,
but it's difficult to conclude that without full pictures of both sides.

It’s taking a licking! It’s had a strike and moved the metal making it look like this. Copper is soft and is easily moved. I agree with Chris.

definitely Post Mint Damage at various times during it's 75 years in the wild.
Imagine if you were still driving a car for 75 years ...

I agree but.... I’m still driving my 89 dodge diesel hauling a dozer and backhoe in the mountains of Arkansas. It has 650,000 miles and a few Arkansas Pinstripes but no post manufacturing damage. ;)

Yeah, but you should allow other people to use it like coinage gets used by who knows how many people in it's lifetime.

Oh no!!! That’s why it’s in the condition it’s in. Same as a MS 65 Bust Half!;)

It took a hit. It's copper so it's a soft metal. You can see the metal movement. It's PMD.
