I'm glad I searched in this forum for one of the sellers named in this thread! I had thought that their prices were too low for what was being offered.

I didi purchase a couple of coins from Sims about three or four years ago, and was surprised at the quality. Both coins, a 1939 d 5c and a 1955 50c arrived with no traces of wear and complete luster. The nickel had a few marks in the fields, but I did buy it as a ms-60 so I would expect a few.

You can be sure that they have no standards. I complained to Coin World about their advertisers (like Chatanooga Coins) who advertised "First Strikes" coins, when everyone knew that the designation was bull****. They actually printed my letter, but kept on advertising. Later, when the "first strikes" designation was abolished, they continued advertising with the equally bogus "Early Releases" designation and are still doing it. If integrity and self-respect was the determining factor, no one would run those ads.

Obnoxious telephone service at John Paul Sarosi

Has anyone had dealings with John Paul Sarosi. I called them this morning to inquire about an 8-coin gold type set that was in their catalog. The person who answered the phone (I assume John Paul, himself) was a total jerk. Before he answered my question, he asked me, in a rather hostile tone "Who is this?". I told him my name and that I was a former customer. He became increasingly annoyed when I asked him to clarify the grade of the coins being offered (which were listed in the catalog as simply "uncirculated"). I said I seemed to have gotten off on the wrong foot with him. He replied that I was asking about things that were already explained in the ad. (anyone here think that all uncirculated coins are the same?).

I told him to forget it; that I would spend my $3,000+ somewhere else.

    Howdy,

I've done a little buying from Paul Sims, but mostly a roll of new Silver Eagles each year in January. I've never had a problem with this.

I did buy some mercs from him a while back and while some looked great, there were others that didn't so I sent them back and received much nicer looking coins.

I concur with the board, however, that many of these big sellers from Coin World are passing EF/AU off as BU after dipping. Frankly, unless you're buying slabbed coins, you almost have to eyeball the coins in person.

I have had good luck with Dave (buffalos) and am sure there are other quality dealers that advertise in Coinworld.

    peace,

    rono

Wasnt there a thread here recently where the majority of posts saw nothing wrong with dipping?. I will search for it, but I believe it was Thursday. And whizzed? A whizzed coin is pretty easy to spot. Why would someone attempt that these days?

    Skyline Coins

Hello, I am new to this forum and am grateful that I found you before I purchased from Skyline Coins. I was considering purchasing a set but now am hesitant after reading all the negatives about this seller. Can someone tell me what "dipping" and "whizzing" is? I have purchased several coins from Collectons and been happy. But am I just dumb and happy?
Anyone have any comments about Collectons.com? Thanks for your help.

Hi Hal and welcome to the forum....Dipping is a process whereby the coin is put into a "chemical soup" of sorts to enhance the appearance. Trouble with that is it usually removes most of the original luster that the coin may have had. Whizzing is a pocess where a wire brush is employed to rework the surface of the coin. Might look good froma distance but put the coin under magnification you'll see liitle circular motion type scratches. This process removes metal from the coin. Depending on who you talk to dipping a coin may be an option. Whizzing is definately a no no.

I'd recommend adding Littleton to this group of over-priced sellers. Their intro offers may be good, but once they hook you in - look out.

The big difference with Littleton is that they have a reputation for being fairly honest and accurate with their gradings. It is their prices that are inflated, not the coin's grade.

So true... Littleton will rip you off, but at least they're up front about it! lol

    Got took by Skyline

:mad:I sent 10 coins purchased from Skyline to ANACS and ALL came back CLEANED/CIRCULATED, graded from VF-25 to AU-50. I called them and after being put and hold 4 times I was told to send them back for a full credit.
I'm just sick about this experience. If and when this gets settled I'll post the results. Ofcourse these coins were advertized as "Premium Quality Choice Brilliant Uncirculated"
