I emailed the seller of the 16D and asked for larger pictures. He replied with the same pictures (same size) that are on the auction. I sent back that the mint mark seems off - a little closer to the rim than it should be. I await his response. While we're in the mood to judge 1916 D dimes, how about this one? It's got quite a story - http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-D-MERCURY-...18&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&timeout=1218770847529
I'll take you word for it.... You sound confident enough for me.... It might actually be an interesting piece to have in hand so I could understand more what you are saying about the cameo contrast. Your other two points I will take your opinion on because I can't make much out of the pics. Like I said I never had the illusion this was a real coin, I just like to play devil's advocate. I think counterfeit coinage detection would be an interesting side hobby... I bid $5 just to see it up close. I'm sure someone who didn't have good advice will have bid much more.
That looks just like the one I dropped a few days ago? I'll have to message the seller and thank them for finding it and give them my address so they can return it. Ribbit Ps: I wonder how it found it's way into a storage locker?
Here's another auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190244782705&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009 I've confirmed with another EAC collector that it isn't a 1793 CBC and he agrees with me that it's probably a 1796 S-87 or 88 or 89, which was determined by the reverse and the reverse is also what determines it isn't a 1793. I've messaged the seller and the only reply has been to my question concerning the edge lettering and he says it is smooth and no edge lettering can be seen, but I knew there wasn't any edge lettering, since the 1796's don't have edge lettering. Also, just by looking at the pics of the coin, it isn't thick enough to be a edge lettered variety. It looks like he's going to go through with the auction and sell it to someone as a 1793 when I've given him all he needs to know it isn't a 1793. That isn't right! Ribbit
Plausible. Potentially life changing coin and he's impatient to get it authenticated? Looks like a potential high grade and no papers to back it up?
Your statement is a bit ambiguous. Saying "The same punch was used for the 1914-D cent." should have ended with "as with the genuine 1916-D dime." Your wording seems to say the fake, wrong mintmark is the same as the 1914-D cent's. http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article1908.chtml
Ebay counterfeits For one of the few times in my life I can't fault Ebay. If they pulled every coin off the someone thought was counterfeit they would create chaos. If there are two high grade 1916D dimes for sale, I could report yours as counterfeit, they would pull the listing and now I only have the high grade 1916D for sale on Ebay. Believe it would happen constantly. Then the end price would be paid by you: the collector,:hammer: as the price rises on the reduced number of coins. If I was involved with Ebay I would fight to leave the policy as it is and let the recourses that are availalble now, work in the future. Vegas Vic
Beware of these sellers: Seatedbustkeys and Classiccoingalleries I have posted this before, but here again to let people know, and beware of the above two sellers if someone happens to come across them. Dont Bid !!!!!! it is a scam I bid on an 1844 dime ANACS Fine 12 in Ebay in an auction ending sunday May 11th. the coin was offered by Seatedbustkeys. A couple of days later i get a note from the seller saying he was not able to use his own paypal account, and he would send me the invoice via another account. Sure enough, the invoice came, this time under another sellers name Classiccoingallery of Niagara Falls NY. I should have stopped right there, and not paypalled the money!!! that was a mighty red flag, but being who i am, unsuspecting, well, i did go ahead. I never suspected a scam to rip me off. The coin was never shipped. I entered a complaint with Paypal who have ruled in my favour and declated this as a clear case of fraud. If you use Ebay beware of these sellers!!! : SeatedandBust Keys and Classiccoingalleries. These guys are probably now selling under a different name, but be on the lookout anyway. Beware of sellers with limited paypal coverage, and like has been said before, if they also have limited feedback (the seller had less than 15 if i remember correctly) If anybody has heard of them, please also let me know. Eduard
Never let someone invoice you from a different account than is registered to their username. That's a clear sign they are doing something unethical and should set off alarm bells in your head. The only exception to this would be a seller that doesn't take PayPal but you talk them into it. I do that with foreign sellers all the time, since wiring the money is too expensive. Ribbit Ps: Did you get my email, Eduard? :secret:
You really need to have at least a picture of a real one then compared to the fake one to see the difference. Without the two, it's almost impossible to tell the difference. Wonder why anybody would spend that amount of time on a counterfeit and not get each detail as perfect as possible?
I wonder how much it costs to make a counterfeit mold? / Stamp? tool and die etc.? then when you go that far, how many coins do you make? and what materials do you make them out of?
Eduard, You are talking to me, I sold you the coin. I have received no email from you stating you received the wrong coin. I sent out two registered packages to Germany. One for an 1857-S Seated Half, one for an 1844 Seated Dime. You did not even give the post office a chance to ship your coin. I shipped as soon as paypal released the funds to me. I had my ebay account banned, and my paypal account suspended. I was on the phone with paypal just to get my funds. Again, I've received no messages from you stating you received the wrong coin. All you had to do was email me. Since I now know about the situation, I am attempting to get the contact info from the other buyer, who most likely received the 1844. Hopefully they speak english! Why do you think I was trying to rip you off?
Hello Earlyrarecoins, I must say when i saw your post, and your address, i thought you may know the seller i was referring to. I never suspected that it was you. The fact you are acknowledging it was you, is a real surprise to me, and i think it takes courage and i respect that. Let us hope we can clear this up. here my version: The auction ended may 11th. June 6th, 3 weeks after auction end and still no coin i contacted you. You answered and you said coin was already shipped. 5-6 weeks after auction end, and still no coin i contacted you (and the other person) again, no answer. At this stage i filed a complaint with Paypal. A few more weeks passed, 10 weeks after auction end i contacted you again, and again, no answer. Now, about that time, that is about 10 weeks after auction end i received a package containing the 1857-S "half Dollar" mailed on the 6 th of June (!!!) fine,i thought, this is maybe a consolation. BUT, the 1857-S hald i received, is, to put it gently, "not real". It weighs 1.5 grams ( > 15 %) or so less than it should. many other details point also to a cast counterfeit. See my post # 65 in this thread: http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=39581 So you have to excuse for thinking you were trying to rip me off, but......the fact of the matter is i bid on and won from you an 1844 dime ANACS Fine 12. What i now have is a fake 1857 -S half. At least two e-mails asking for explanations went unanswered. Again, i really welcome you replying. But now please set this straight for me. With regards, Eduard
Gentlemen - if I may suggest, please take this to PM's and settle it privately. You may of course report back on the outcome.
currently running scam with 3 fake key Morgans (that's my opinion, of course): 220279297934, 220279299192, 220279300125 The fleecing is in progress, so if you agree I hope you will report to the ccw program. thanks.
