I noticed a 1939 P Jefferson Nickel for sale on eBay for $420. I have a 1939 Jefferson Nickel that I bought from a guy that looks wayyyy better than that one and it's supposed to be a reverse of 38 or something but that's just what I was told. I don't know how to check because I don't know what that means exactly but anyways back to my point... Is my nickel worth a lot or has someone exaggerated the price on the ebay one? I payed $16 bucks for mine I probably got ripped off too huh? I guess I need to post a picture I'll do that now...
The 1939 P is very common. There are some varieties, the best is the reverse doubled die where the letters of MONTICELLO are clearly doubled. There is the reverse of 38 and the reverse of 40 which carries a premium, but to get ridiculous money like that the grade must be very high and difficult to attain in a small population. Perhaps post photos of both coins, both sides and you will get some informed opinions. Offhand $16 seems like a great deal of money for this coin, unless there is something special about it. Circulated examples aren't even worth a dime.
The condition is excellent. (Appears to be mint state.) The bottom 3, IDK what is going on without being told. The top one, if it is a common 1939-P mint state USA Coin Book has it valued at $13 in MS 65. However they are a little high in their prices, we don't know what the grade of your coin is (it could be better) but it's not worth paying the $ to have it graded. If it is higher than MS 65 then you got a good deal. There is a thread here with photos which will explain: 1939 Reverse of 1938, 1939 Reverse of 1940. So use the search box to find that thread. If your coin is one of those, then it looks to be very good.
Think that price is high? Check this out: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1939-5C-Do...829282?hash=item4b61e33c62:g:kiMAAOSwtwVcpP3c
Is that machine doubling or what is it? I've been told it's die wear. That's a close up with a coin microscope however I don't have a TF card in it that I need to take pictures so I'm taking pictures of the screen of the microscope with my phone. The struggle is real y'all.
The flip isn't helping. I agree with DDD, even MD is possible. Here are some DDR references if to want to check your coin. http://varietyvista.com/04a JN DD Vol 1/DDRs 1939.htm
What do you mean by the flip isn't helping? I don't understand. Sorry if I'm being stupid here or something.
"Flip" is a coin holder. Actually, I use the term "flip" to refer to clear plastic double-pocket safety flips, and not the cardboard holders like that, which I and most people refer to as "2x2's". But that's a digression. Some people call those cardboard holders "flips", too. In any event, when he said "the flip isn't helping", I suspect he meant the 2x2 holder was interfering with proper examination of the coin.
Oh yeah it's getting in my way of taking pictures. It's causing a reflection from the lights. I think I'll take it out, photograph it, and put it in my own "flip".
It's pretty coin. What are your plans for this coin? It would be a great first coin to start a Jefferson album!......if you don't already have one.
As for the DD on the reverse of the 1939, I believe the doubling is more prominent on the first few letters in Monticello. You can check photos here for those coins, just use the search box.
