i have got a 1872 half penny coin in good condition. could you please tell me if it is worth anything. thanks
It can be perfectly real, considering that the US made half CENTS not half pennies! An 1872 BRITISH halfpenny is probably worth somewhere in the vicinity of $1 or $2, but can be more depending on condition.
The coin on ebay was likely in exceptional condition, and probably overpriced even at that. Can you post a picture of your coin?
I know what a British half penny looks like. But we would need a picture of your coin to evaluate the grade of it. To fetch anything like £175, the coin would need to be in absolute mint state. To give some more ideas of price, the same Spinks guide I cited earlier give the 1872 a value of £85 in uncirculated condition. The Krause Standard Catalogue of World Coins (mainly an American reference) give it a value of $150 in uncirculated condition. Theoretically, it could bring more but again, it would have to be an exorbitantly high grade.
