Hard to believe this one slipped away and circulated so long.....But, maybe it did. I'm no expert on patterns, just thought some in here may find this interesting.......Coin facts states that many diff obv/rev die marriages exist for this pattern. The second 8 looks a bit funky, but it doesn't appear to be an altered 1859....Do you think it's genuine?
it looks altered to me but i could be 1005 wrong if you can provide close ups it will be more helpful. also you might want to send it to PCGS/NGC for authentication if after the discussion here you feel its real
Yours appears very similar to the Judd 208 variety (there are several 1858 IHC patterns). It would seem that a pattern would have a smoother field than yours appears to have. Judge for yourself and send it in for authentication to be sure. Where did you get it??? More here - http://www.collectors-society.com/r.../Gallery-SignatureSet222-1858PatternCents.htm
Clarification.....Didn't mean to insinuate that this is my coin, it's not.....It is currently for sale. The asking price is about the same as an equally graded 77.
I emailed the seller to ask why the coin hasn't been submitted to a grading service for authentication. No answer yet.
And you probably never will receive an answer! Save the heartache of a possible fake and bid on the one at the link below! http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/59...118QQitemZ320286074118QQtimeoutZ1218661652656 Frank
The seller is starting it at $900 - far more than the genuine 1858 pattern here - http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/59...118QQitemZ320286074118QQtimeoutZ1218661652656 This is really strange since the seller is a coin dealer and has over 12000 ebay transactions with 99+% positive. You'd think he would know better. Oh well, as I write this there's less than an hour to go and no bids. It looks like there aren't any suckers for this one. If he re-lists I'll notify ebay.
