Unfortunately, this nickel has been slaughtered a little bit by some nic-a-date. I was still wondering if this used to be the elusive 1918/7 D. I read up on the identifying die crack on the obverse and the placement of the D mint mark on the reverse. I am still very unsure what I have here. Let me know if you guys have any advice whatsoever, as I'd like to use this in my collection if it can be identified. Thank you again for any knowledge you can share.

I don't see the die crack.

There is one here on PCGS. Look at the smaller MS-65 picture. It shows the die crack almost reaching the mouth. The plate coin shows just the very beginning of the die crack forming.

Thank you for the info. I've got a small pile of other dateless buffaloes. What is the best way to determine the dates?

That one above looks like it already got the Nic-A-Date acid treatment.

It did. The OP wanted to know how to determine the date on dateless Buffalos so I gave my opinion. I really don't know of any other way. It does damage the coin but with no date to start.....

Sorry, wasn't reading the OP properly, where he actually said that in the first sentence. Apparently my eyes skipped right to the pictures.

    Mint mark position is wrong.
