I would like some help grading this quarter. I bought it for 1.60 at a collecting store. It was the only coin there, minus the others like it. I looked it up on NCG, and for every grade in mint state, there is a big difference. I know it is uncirculated, but I don’t know the exact grade. I was hoping one of you might be able to help me find out the grade. Thank you in advance.
Old fashioned grading would be MS-63, “commercial MS-64, because of the scattered marks on the obverse that are easy to see. State Quarter grading standards, when the coins were popular it would have been MS-65. It would be much higher without the marks because of the luster. A dealer I know was selling certified Delaware Quarters to customers in”MS-65” holders circa 2000 for $45 each. I took one look at them and said, “pocket charge in a slab.” A couple of shows later, one of his customers showed up at a show and wanted do him bodily harm. At that point that point I was glad that I was not in the slabbed State Quarter business.
This thread makes me wonder how many people collect certified state quarters. To my eye this is an easy MS66 with a shot at MS67. That said, these don’t really go up in value till they reach MS68. I’m pretty sure @cpm9ball mentioned that he made money selling registry quality state quarters, maybe he will see this and give his opinion.
In my opinion, it will never make 67, but that would be a moot point since it would cost more to grade it than a 67 would be worth. And, that even includes a grading special from ANACS. ~ Chris
Thank you all! No, I am not sending it in for grading, just wasn’t sure what the grade was. But thank you for all the help!
Sorry, Paul. I guess I just misunderstood your question. Yes, I think it would grade 66, but no chance for a 67. The reason I believe that it is a moot point is because SQ's in 67 only sell for about $10-15. So, it makes no difference if it grades 66 or 67. ~ Chris
And I don't mean to beat a dead horse in this thread, but this is an old photo of an MS68 State Quarter that I used to own for comparison sake.
Yes, I suspect Mr. Rodney and his horse have been dead for quite a few years And, if that's a 68, then I might not be surprised to see the OP's coin as a 67.
Really? Man, that looks like a lot of chatter on that coin for a 68! Unless it's on the slab. But congrats!!
