An aquantiance of mine who owns a coin shop recently bought a random lot of coins and has offered it to me before putting it out to sell. It includes:

2005 Marine Corps Commemrative Coin Graded MS70 by NGC
2002 UNC American Eagle Silver dollar -- Ungraded by I would guess probably a MS67
2003 American Eagle Silver Dollar -- Graded MS69 by NGC
2007/2008 First Strike Presidential Dollar Set -- All 8 Graded PR70 - DCam by ANACS

The price he is giving...out the door is 234.00. Is this anywhere near a decent deal????? If so I will buy, If not what do you guys think an appropriate price for the assortement should be????

Thanks again for all of your help!!!!!!!!

In my opinion, it is way over-priced. I wouldn't spend $100 for it.

Two 1 oz silver coins, one MS-69, probably about $40.

It should be an okay deal, or at least close. Ms 70 coins usually command at least a mild premium over 69.

Irespire, If I could get him down to 160 - 175 would you purchase the lot?

GDJ, I couldn't have even purchased all of these from the mint and had them graded for 100?

Oh, I thought the purchase price was $100. $100 I thought was an okay deal. Sorry.

IMO, $234 is probably fairly overpriced, too. But this all depends how much the presidential $1's and the marine commem is going for.

I have seen the Marine Corps Coin go consistently over 100 at Grade 70. Almost every website I have found a grade 70 priced for 149.

And the Prez set Grade 70 go for 100 to 200 on ebay. That is just for a 2007 or 2008 alone.

But from what both of you have said I think I would pay 175. I need a couple of the Eagles for my set. I don't really care if they are ever going to be worth anything, I love the American Eagles...they are beautiful coins and want to complete my set.

175 sounds fine then, but keep in mind, BIG price difference between most NGC and PCGS MS 70 coins. PCGS is stricter.

You can't add the cost of grading to a coin's purchase price. MS69 ASE's routiney sell for around $20 each - it cost that mcuh just for the grading fees alone.

And don't pay too much attention to what things sell for on ebay - there's too many outh there who have no idea of the true value and they overpay.

For coins like these, perhaps the best way to judge value is what you can sell them for to a dealer. If you walked into a dealer's shop and attempted to sell those coins to him, I guarantee you that he would not offer $100 total. So you take the offer price, add 20% to it and you have a fair purchase price. Anthing more is over-paying.

No, they aren't. But many believe they are.

Really? They seem to be. I've heard that they have stronger standards for a strong strike.

But, if the MS 70 marine dollar is going for some real money, wouldn't $100 be barely anything?

or does it only have retail sale value, and no dealer buyback value?

If you could get it all for $175.00, that seems like a heck of a deal to me. They only minted 49k of the Marine corps commem. MS-67 books at $50.00. Right off the bat, I would have guessed a 70 to be worth at least over $100.00 by itself.

Then it's whatever you're willing to do from there.

Hey Vess, every retail site I have been on I can't find the coin MS70 for less than 150.00 and on ebay they are going for at least that much and more...consistantly. I saw probably 15 coins, going through past sells and the least I saw was 80.00 bucks.

I was under the impression the NGC, ANACS and PCGS were considered the top 3 grading companies and were fairly close. I have heard a lot of folks then classify NGC as the top of the top??? I guess a lot of that is really subjective and up to the individual.

That's really the way you look at it? I never go by that. I guess because I try to never sell anything to a dealer because they expect wholesale so they can make a profit.

If he has the time, he can turn the offer down, and take them to ebay where everybody's willing to pay, or over-pay. Whatever it is. If he doesn't have the time or desire, take that into consideration and knock them down some.

Looks like a good opportunity to get a good deal here.

I think your right Vess, just look at what Proof 70 Pres dollars are selling for. 2007 and 2008 sets are all going for 75 -100.....consistantly. Just go search it. My thought was to get the Prez sets, put them on e-bay and try and get 75 - 100 each out of them and that pays for the rest of my coins????

The Marine commem MS70 is selling for $80 on Heritage. The ASE's are maybe $20 each. As for the Pres dollars by ANACS, the way ANACS grades now I wouldn't give you $1 each for them.

Supposedly perfect coins viewed under 5x magnification at whatever grader is grading them shouldn't have hugely different characteristics, beyond someones very slight opinion.

Seems like people prefer different grading companies. I prefer NGC and have not purchased a PCGS yet. Don't know why.

I have heard PCGS sends many fewer 70's out the door. Does this mean they are being stricter? Or that there are many PCGS 69 coins out there, that should be 70s. But PCGS doesn't do it in an attempt to make it seem like their grading is "stricter" so people will pay more for their products, thereby acquiring more business for them?

How much do presidential proofs in 68-69 go for? At least 3-5 each, right?

You can buy them from the mint for less than that.

My personal opinion is that for certain coins PCGS is better and for others NGC is better. ANACs is always a toss up.

As to the original post - I think 175 is an decent deal. But like some others I would not buy a 70 anythine. Not worth the premium to me and I have never looked at an ANACs 70.
