Maine... Finally! Thanks to a "stranger's" kindness.

For about 3 years now, I've been collecting the U.S. Statehood quarters. It's fun because I get to partake in the hobby not just in my spare time (as with most hobbies), but sporadically throughout the day, whenever I come across some change.

I was able to get almost all of them in no time at all - and even replaced a good number of them whenever I came across better ones. But - after 3 years - I still could not get Maine, and the two final Territories (American Samoa and Northern Mariana Islands). I happened to mention that in a reply to another post last week.

Soon afterwards, I was contacted by a CT member to ask me if I'd like to have 2 of the quarters I'm missing. I was very surprised by the kind gesture. It's nice to be on the receiving end of a random act of kindness. Thanks @Beardigger, for your gift. It's something I'll never forget. I'm reminded of one of Robert Brault's snippets: "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize that they were the big things." Thank you! By the way, I also do not have a Lamborghini. And it doesn't have to be yellow.

That's awesome, and congrats on finishing your set.

Cool. Being from Maine. I see the state quarter frequently in circulation

I wonder why that is? I understand that the Mint does not distribute the quarters specifically in the corresponding state.

I had a tough time getting the territory quarters and a couple other states. I finally gave up and went to ebay. That was a couple of years ago. I was able to finish my State Quarters book within a week. I think I spent less than $10 for all of the Territory P & D quarters. During my search for the state quarters, I would search her purse (without her permission). She got a bowl out, and after every visit to stores, she would empty her quarters in the bowl. I still look at the state quarters and if I find a quarter that is better than those that I had in my book, I would update that state quarter. Now you need to go after the America the Beautiful quarters. Based on my stress level with the state quarters, I buy the 3-pack of the ATB quarters from the mint. More expensive, but they are absolutely beautiful. Best of luck in your collecting.

Yeah. Me neither... but mine HAS to be yellow.

    Cause that's how I roll.

I once collapsed in the park. The good samaritans who came to my rescue loosened my clothing and elevated my feet. I began to feebly enunciate what I needed in order to be revived..they leaned forward to hear what I was hoarsely whispering:

    "Cham...pagne....Dom Perignon...."

    I have standards, you know!

    About the Statehood Quarters:
Are these popular with anyone? I bought one of these for someone I know. When I got it in the mail, I was surprised at the rather decent quality of the thing. Cardboard's not the best for coin preservation, but it still looked and felt like a solid, quality product.

Thanks for sharing your story. Yeah - I was tempted to get the missing ones from eBay or Littleton too, but, as I had mentioned to @Beardigger as well, I think it's more fun to find them in circulation. In fact, I told him that I'll continue looking for Maine. As for the National Park Quarters, guess what - I've been collecting those too. All current through 2019, except for San Antonio Missions. So far so good. By the way, do you know what makes the 2018 ATB Quarters different from all the rest? (Scroll beyond the photo below to see the answer.)

    20200216_175016.jpg

Answer: The design for each of the five 2018 ATB Quarters shows a body of water. No other year (so far) has that common element running through all 5 designs.

I hope you get the Lambo, too. LOL. I see you didn't put any quarters in that folder. I like the colored "pop-outs" for each state. What are they - the State emblems? If you pop them out for the quarters, you should save them.

Right. The pop outs are indeed the State emblems.

I didn't buy this map for myself, but for a friend overseas who wanted one. I think he trashed the little state emblem discs.

I put one of those maps together with my son as the quarters were being released. I had forgotten about the thing. I’ll have to plunder the closet and pull it out.

I got one of those state quarter maps(just last week) for the son of one of my favorite bank tellers. I will often give the tellers a coin in a flip or plastic case. Last week, I gave them all a BAT (American samoa 2020) quarter. Well one teller's son is 11 and she has been giving him the coins.....He wrote me the nicest little thank you note for the coins.........So I asked his mom if she would mind if I got him a state quarter map, and she said he would love it, and that he has spent a lot of time researching the coins I have given so far.......

Congratulations on your completion! I live in Finland so I still have a long way to go to complete my collection. I visited the USA this autumn and was able to get many of the states, and some of the National Parks, but as they are a little harder to come by here it goes slowly. I got the Maine rather quickly, and also one from Samoa, but many others are missing.

I try to get all of the mintmarks, as i do also with the Euro coins (one of each country from every year. Germany for example has 5 different mintmarks so that makes 40 different coins every year, plus the special circulating commemorative 2 euro coins and other commemoratives). Less and less people use cash here today, and some stores don´t even accept cash anymore, only cards.
This is sad for our hobby.

Do you have the same "problem" in the USA?
    Perhaps a Little off topic… :)

Also a Mainer. I don't even have a single State quarter in my collection, but I love it when Maine gets from love on these forums. Congrats on getting your Maine. Now you need to visit!

This reminded me of a story. When I was about 80% completed, I posted the status on my Facebook page. A friend from Singapore told me that she already has a COMPLETE Statehood quarters set - just from visiting the U.S. for only 2 weeks!!! How?! I asked her. She said she and her boyfriend bothered everyone on the tour bus until they collected the whole set!

I have a good number of Euro coins but not anywhere near the complete set. I would love to see your collection thus far. Do you have them in an album?

I don't think so, although many transactions are cashless. It's a lot more convenient.

It'll be a little while before we are purely a cashless system. What has become apparent is that some folks can't get a credit card and must use cash to pay for things. So until that problem is better remediated, they'll need to maintain a cash system. But I almost always use cash. In my effort to feed my hobby, I make change whenever possible in order to have something to checkout and perhaps, file away in my collection. Regarding the subject of this thread; I have the P and D quarters for each state and for the territories and parks. All picked from change and most are AU or better. It took a while to do...but it is certainly doable when you make change as often as I do. Same thing for my other circulation sets; pocket change or CRH events (I haven't done an event in more than 3 years and even then, only cents and nickels). But there isn't a race in my mind, so slow and steady is the course I prefer to take. That said, I had help from fellow enthusiasts for this-or-that...and I've returned the good fortune in kind. If folks have the means to do so, I encourage it. The feeling is incredible!!

Debit cards. Then in the future a chip will be implanted somewhere on the human body that will track all matriculation information including your banking account in bit coin or US Dollars or whatever monetary system is prevailing. Big Brother is watching!

So many tourists. Such a short hunting season. Wish they’d make it legal to shoot them. Or at least their cars
