hi, all. looking for some ideas -- i'd like to purchase a new gold piece for my collection. i don't want to buy anthing new; i'd like a bit of history (anything after, say, 1700 would fit the bill -- most of my recent buys have been ancients, so i'm looking for something more modern this go around). thoughts? i'm interested both in coin suggestions, as well as reputable dealers / auction sites. thanks! v.
A couple of months ago I bought a Napoleon I 20FF coin dated 1808 I think, for about 20% over melt. When they are circulated, they are pretty common.
You can get some decent deals on Old German Imperial (Prussian) coins like the 10 mark below, I also got a nice French 20 franc also picture below. Both were reasonable but priced well over gold content...but they were in great condition, the German one is nearly FDC I have bought most of my old euro gold at vcoins and have been very happy with most dealers there and there are plenty there to choose from www.vcoins.com

His is infamous for nourishing the desires of new world gold collectors with his vast knowledge of the subject and visual stimulations. Causing individuals to spend vast sums of paper currency to accumulate these shiny objects. Believe me ....I know from first hand knowledge !!!!! :whistle::whistle::whistle::whistle::whistle:

Not guilty Your Honor, not guilty ! All I ever did was show 'em a few purty pictures, tell 'em how cheap it was compared to US coins, that the rarity factors were multiples of US, that the history was way more intersting than US, and that the beauty, well there was no comparison. Now how does that make me guilty ? :whistle:
I know you have the same one from looking at your site, but how did your Mrs. take to having one of these: I love coins that merge passions, mine being fine art, this case La Maja Desnuda by Goya, and gold.
I can beam him up...but to a nice planet, he's got a point Hi Spock, Thought they were kidding... I actually diversified the gold into some historical pieces partially because we moved to Europe. Anyone outside the U.S. will tell you that Americans are far too absorbed with their own, albeit beautiful, coinage. And since I was a history buff, I started with the same suggestions above (Prussian and French 19th c-- which are a dime a dozen on the Continent) but saw quickly that beautiful Louis d'Or or 1/2 Louis can be had circulated for nearly the same cost. And then, some of the Austrian-Hungarian and Bavarian coins are not so costly and also beautiful. Plus, there is always a nice St. George killing the dragon on the reverse British Imperial sovereign. These all run between 200-500 bucks depending on the grade... Enjoy!
