This has been sitting on my desk for a while, it came from one of the last Budgood bags and I need help !! LOL What do you think. It weighs 2.6 gr and averages about 16 mm in diameter and 1 mm thick and bronze of some sort. Thanks folks Edit: the scale is english and graduated in 1/64ths
looks like a julia maesa but could be off on that as all the Julia paula, julia aquilia severa , julia soaemaias look very similar but might give u a lead EDIT: lol totally off on my part ah wells
It almost seems too nice to be real. It is die struck, as there are no cast lines or seams, but thats about it as far as my skill can take me. I cannot imagine a relic/ancient like this having the hair detail this coin has.
Stainless is right, ancients can have alot of detail. Your coin does look kind of strange though A.Z. I'm far from being an expert on ancients though.
Harryj, What? Didn't you know? Didn't AJ tell you? AJ can really keep a secret, yes he can. His ancient is 100+ years older than mine... teehee. jeankay
Sorry Bud, you're off by about two hundred years. That is a VERY nice coin of Fausta, wife of Emperor Constantine. Fairly rare too, an R4 from a Western mint usually means it is actually rare. Let me know if you want to get rid of it, Jack. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fausta Fausta Follis Arles, 325-326 AD mantled bust r. with head bare, waved hair FLAV MAX - FAVSTA AVG Empress standing facing, looking left, head veiled, holding two children in her arms SALVS REI-PVBLICA QA crescent RL in exergue RIC VII Arles 298 R4
I had a feeling I was , but I knew you would come along & set me straight.:goof: Oh well I tried- Just another reminder to stay in my envelope of expertise.
Drusus, I simply cannot pass this chance to stir it up a bit, laugh along with me: I will sell you the coin only after it is back from slabbing, I need to make a big profit on this one.
Wonderful. When they missattribute it as Constantine the Great Bronze, 300-360 AD I'll buy it at a steal.
Do you think they will get that close? I was thinking it would come back classified as a 4th Century Macedonian Tetradrachm
