I started collecting clad Ikes. I saw this article; https://coinweek.com/us-coins/when-dealing-with-eisenhower-dollars-grade-is-everything/ and they illustrate some pricing irregularities. E.g.; Coin Red Book[1] MS-63 NGC/ FMV[2] MS-65 PCGS[3] MS-65 1971 $7 $97.50 $225 1971-D $6 $41.25 $60 1972 T1 $6 $87.50 $250 1972 T2 $70 $1,880 $1,900 1972 T3 $6 $150 $190 (hope the table shows up okay, and I just noticed the RB63 vs the graded 65). But I paid about $2.50 for each of the 30 I bought today and I got 1 of the 72II, and at least one of each of the others, 3 71p. One dealer looked exclusively at grey sheet where they're all $2 to $4 (he didn't have the 72II), the dealer that did had it priced affordably, the third dealer I dealt with had 1, but it was priced at $100, and I wasn't sure if it was a type II, or if it had worn clean, the coin was not in very good condition. I've bought a few off of ebay too, and the 71D went for $28, and some others have gone for $10 or so, but regardless, seem to sell for values closer to the NGC/PCGS price level than the red book level. I know the ikes were the undervalued darling from the necro thread I resurrected and someone wrote that those were the only item to hit. It seems odd that I could go buy so many at such an attractive price, one dealer commented he was glad to sell them. THoughts? I guess I'm hoping to get input on why is there such discrepancy? Is there a price guide that is all encompassing (Grey sheet is what, $35/copy?)? And maybe some input on how to better maximize my budget.
Take your examples and do a search on recently ended auctions on ebay. That should get you a better 'ballpark'.......
Put the price guides away. Look at auction results. That's what folks were willing to pay. Post images of the coins you bought if you would like to know what they grade. Welcome to CT.
Because many dealers just treat moderns as junk and are happy to get rid of them and hopefully continue to do so. Many also struggle with grading moderns and have bad results trying to enter the modern market and give up. Many if not the majority of modern collectors buy almost exclusively online knowing that the majority of shops won't have anything they're looking for
I'm not an Ike collector, but just looking at Numismedia FMV, yep, there's a huge difference between 63 and 65. Not a lot of gem Ikes floating around for those dates/varieties, apparently.
