Was looking for a different coin and I accidently stumbled onto this coin and bought it. Now I have another one, @rrdenarius this is addicting ! Carthago Nova Iberia, c. 237 - 206 B.C. Spain, Carthago Nova Æ Unit. Roman Occupation after 209 BC. Bare-head left (Scipio Africanus?) Horse standing right; palm tree behind. CNH Class XI, 282; SNG BM Spain 127-128; ACIP 609. Here is the one I had already.
Well the second one in the pics was right about $650 after all the fees in auction. The first one in the pics was right at $65 shipped.
Congrats, @bcuda! $65 is a superb price! What venue were you perusing and found this? Mine is just about 23mm... Punic Iberia Roman Occupation, 209-206 BC AE Unit, Carthago Nova mint Obverse: Bare male head left. Reverse: Horse standing right; palm tree in background. References: CNH Class XI, 282; SNG BM Spain 127-128; ACIP 609 Size: 22.8mm, 10.49g Ex: Forvm Ancient Coins
An enigmatic issue. This is the only ancient coin I've bought on eBay. The OP's is much nicer than mine.
I believe it is SCIPIO in IBERIA Read his history, and about his personality: yeah, he would had quietly sanctioned coins made with his image... far from Rome, right after he skunked the Barcas, in their CAPITAL of Spain! Yeah, they are him... young, wipper-snapper, head full of hair, kinda anonymous, but his bold-style... first Roman on a coin. Carthago Nova Scipio 209-206 BCE AE 14 Horse Head Carthago Nova SCIPIO Africanus Roman Occupation 209-206 BCE Sear Vol2 6575 Left
@Alegandron I have seen a couple of coins with the horse head on the reverse is it the same size coin as the one with the horse and palm tree coin ?
Seems Carthage put horse heads on the smaller fractionals. Horse and palm on larger flans that had more room. My issues above are 14 mm for the head, and approx 22 mm for the Horse and Palm... i feel Scipio picked up the Carthage dies and replaced Tanit, the Patron Goddess of Carthage, and removed her. Wow, I betcha the male head may had resembled him in his youth.
