I'm not a huge fan of Roosevelt dimes. However, I see some real nice ones go into the "junk silver" bin and am considering saving a few of these. These were nice so I bought them and will actually buy more if I find buyers. I don't really want them just hate to see nice coins go to waste. So I'll ask grade opinions on this small group. First pictures from left to right are 1947-S and 1947. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0007-5.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0008-7.jpg Next from left to right and then the bottom are 1954, 54-D and 1955. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0009-6.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0010-4.jpg Should I "rescue" coins like these? I'm NOT looking for offers here but honest opinions WOULD be appreciated. Thanks in advance. clembo
I'd love to "rescue" a lot of coins but unfortunately my pockets are only so deep. If I know I have a buyer then I do it. As for the 54 that would be dust or maybe a hairball(?) on my scanner.
Do you have a michevious cat that takes photo copies of his/her posterier?:mouth::whistle: Well, since you dont care much for Roosies, in the future you might not wanna "rescue" those EF's or AU's even. But this goes for any coin that you don't care for. Unless, of course, you see a coin you could resell for a profit, then by all means, rescue it. So again, if I were you, I would only rescue coins with a real value, or if you actually liek them.
sorry clembo, I really don't know how to grade these, they look nice though! and if you got them for melt, it sounds worth it to me!
Hope I didn't sound "snooty" Coinman because not my intention by any means. I love coins even if they are NOT my favorites. I bought the Roosevelts because they were nice and I hate to see ANY nice coin go away believe me. I also saw a ton of Washingtons, Kennedies, Jeffersons, Ikes, Susie Bs and the list goes on my friend. That was just today. I'm filling a few want lists now actually. Yes, I make a few bucks, my boss makes a few bucks too even though I know EXACTLY what he paid for them. Only wish I could buy them all but the lottery gods have failed me. At least to this point.
Clembo - I think your question should be a larger one. You work at a coin shop, you are gaining knowledge on top of your own to recognize value, and you need to decide if you want to take the time to have your own sales thing going. To me, go all the way and turn/deal some of your picked inventory or let it go. You also must factor your time investment in your calculation. Lastly, there is an ethical issue. If you do this (deal) more and more, how does that square with your employer? Yeah, I know I blew up your question, but to me it's a lot more than just a few dimes!
I say yes rescue them, remember when silver goes up, people will scrap those dimes and in 10-20 years the "saved ones" will fetch a pretty penny.
If they look like those let 'em go. If you can find some that are umarked, no spots and with booming luster - sure keep 'em. Even those will be cheap - for now.
You have no idea how you nailed that one Catbert. For starters, no I did not pay melt for these. I paid a premium BUT a premium most won't find. I'm up front and honest about that. I do appreciate a nice coin whether or not it's for me. Believe me, most have NOT been for me. I have to eat and pay bills. My boss has no problem with this as LONG AS I'M NOT SELLING TO ANOTHER DEALER. I told him I wanted these to see if I could move them. Plain and simple. Finally I have only so much money to tie up. If I buy I NEED to turn and yes my time is involved. I hope to be able to provide coins cheap but still get a bit for my effort. This is a side jaunt for me. I make a few bucks which I can use for bills or my own collection while selling coins at reasonable prices. It may grow if time allows. This thread has taken a strange turn and I'm as responsible for that as anyone else. I'll ask again therefore. Grade opinions? I have mine in my head. clembo
Out of all 5 I like the 47 and 47 S. The 47 is a better coin, however the 47 S is almost as good with a much lower mintage. 47 MS 64-65 ? 47 S MS 63-64?
I have a hard time grading Roosevelts because they're really the only coins I can purchase where I can picik and choose between a MS-60 or MS-63 or MS-65 and afford to do that! Many times, I'll see the MS-63 and MS-65 and have a really hard time telling why they got those grades. So with Roosies, I have a tendancy to go MS, but after that go for eye appeal. For example, I like the looks of the 1947-S better than the 1947-P even though that one probably grades higher. If they were the same coin, I would probably buy the 1947-S. But I do shed a tear for the Roosies. Way too many made, Way too many hoarded/saved. They'll never be a popular collector series in our lifetimes - heck there aren't even any famous varieties or errors except for those proofs missing the mint mark.
Clembo: I know what you mean. I have 'rescued' a number of nice toned, unc Roosies from the melting pot lately. And I don't save Roosies. I have done the same with some 'average' Mers also. Last time, I rescued: a 1916 P G+, a 1930 P, G, and a 1919, VG-F.
