Dangit!! I hate threads like this, for one simple reason. It has me bidding on and scouring the usual online coin stores for nice MS wartime nickels! I have a set, but all are circulated. After seeing all the great uncirculated sets here, I decided it would be fun to assemble one myself. It's a short set I never really gave much thought to. I'll send a bill out to the OP. Just kidding about the bill.... Guy~
To many to show! Look here http://www.omnicoin.com/user_view.aspx?id=Nickelman more than just War Nickels but a majority are War Nickels. Only some of my War Nickels anyways! Great Post!
Cool concept - bill the original poster who peaked your interest. So bonedigger where do you want me to send the bill for all those wonderful CBH's I have? And you only get the bill not the halves. This sounds line fun. There are a lot of nice coins in this thread, they don't have to be ms. So post away with what you have.
That is the coolest collection of War Nickels I have ever seen! I have a 1943/2 in VG that I could sell you, but you need to put together a "low rent neighborhood" collection to show it off. Gorgeous collection! Mike
Thanks guys, I worked very hard to put this set together. It is currently ranked 17th in the NGC Registry The 1942-P and the 1943-S are not really part of the set (no toning); I just added them to make the photo look more complete. If I resubmit the 1942-S and 1944-D for star designation, I will jump from 17th to 8th place. Once I complete the collection, I will be a lock for 3rd place. I have no chance of ever surpassing the top two sets, they are ridiculously good. The top set has 5 different MS68's including an MS68 FS and his 1943/2-P is MS67*. My guess is that coin cost more than my entire collection.
Since I posted my registry set, I might as well most my duplicates set. This set is missing 4 coins, 1942-P & S, 1943/2-P, & 1944-D. Every coin in this set is either MS65 or MS66 none with FS. This set is still very nice but doesn't have the WOW factor that the registry set has. Remember that conversation about monster toning...hmmm!
No chance of me catching you. They are all FS and grade MS-64 to -66. I'm currently ranked 58th with only the '43/2 missing. I intend to get one, but that won't be enough.
Incredibly nice collection of MS "TONERS" WOW!!! One wonders how you are acquiring these beauties? What's you're secret? I store coins I want to tone in holders and cases that I know will make the coin tone...over time...a lot of time. I love watching them change over the years. The toning continues and gets better. I'm fascinated with some of the AT coins I've seen. The process has gotten so easy that, almost over night, you can tone coins that the experts are having a hard time identifying it as artificial. I'm a great fan of "rainbow" toning, with lots of intensive colors. MS coins are the grades I collect. Getting them to tone the way I like...again WOW!!! Thanks and Keep on Collecting!!! Allen
Allen, I have been fortunate over the last year. The majority of these coins came from the Bingham Collection and are pedigreed as such. Greg Bingham is one of the big money collectors over at the NGC Registry. For some reason, he decided to sell off his toned war nickels and I snatched them up. The rest I got on E-Bay 1942-P Heritage 1942-S E-Bay 1943-P E-Bay 1943-S Heritage 1944-P Bingham Collection--Anaconda 1944-D E-Bay 1944-S E-Bay 1945-P E-Bay 1945-D Bingham Collection--Anaconda 1945-S Bingham Collection--Anaconda I have posted a photo below of the 1945-D Bingham Collection coin. The cool thing about this holder is that NGC decided to keep the "T" designation that they used years ago to describe vividly toned coins when the coin was reholdered and the pedigree was added. Kinda cool, not too many "T" designations around. Oh yeah, one last thing. Before I started my search for these coins, my wallet was full, now uh, not so much.
You have been blessed my friend, fortunate is an understatement. I can relate to your wallet issue, mine stays in a state of empty at the moment. I'd would be in hog heaven to have coins of this grade and "character". Thanks for sharing. Allen
here's one I picked up a few weeks ago. some of you may have seen it... I always wanted a War Nickel proof! Not the best, but it is what I wanted...
