Reading the article now.
I assume the dealer figured it was a replica? When I read "junk bin" I figured a dealer.
Oh it's a flea market in Europe. Even if it was fake I would go for half a Euro.
Nice score. Did it come back MS 62? Or that's just the price in MS 62. It doesn't make that clear.

I'd sure like to hear the history on that bill. Where has it been? Who touched it?

 

It isn't a bill. It is a coin (maybe?, there's been some recent research and serious debate if it is actually a coin or a medal, or even if was produced in the US).

And with a grade of 62... not many people have touched it.

 

All it takes is the right person.

 

It brings to my mind just how much experience a grader in Paris has with such a coin? Would they have consulted an expert, if there is one, on this coin? I don't doubt PCGS ability to grade, but if only a few have actually graded a coin like it, how would they compare them?

Senior graders are making the call on something like that.

 

A good grader can grade any coin. Strike, Luster, Eye appeal, Contact marks, and wear - if you understand these basic components, you can give a confident grade on any coin. The grading on this would be the same basic process as any other token.

Additionally, any experienced grader of US coins (the sort who'd be hired at PCGS), has handled at least a couple of Continental Currency pieces. They are legendary.

I'm quite sure, however, on something like this there were experts called in to authenticate the coin. This is a $100,000 coin, and they'd want to make sure they got it right.
