Thank you. I wasn't sure if it was the same coin or just a type. I need to pay more attention to the date of the OP. Not the first time I've done this.
In very technical terms of grading going from a Red Brown coin to a Brown is a downgrade. But when you consider the coin was in an ICG holder then crossed to a PCGS holder at the same grade, less the designation, the value has increased.
Yeah, for plastic buyers it has. For people who buy coins - not the plastic - it hasn't changed a bit.
coin geek just did two video's on the pro's and cons crossing/cracking. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...EAD1B9C07911D581D2CBEAD1B9C07911D58&FORM=VIRE
I think the whole 3rd party grading/slabbing is a waste of time/money and a detriment to the hobby/profession. Part of numismatics is learning and acquiring the skills to accurately grade coins. I think slabbing will ultimately turn out to be a poor investment. Just my two denarii.
That ship sailed longgggggggg ago. It's been basically 4 decades since the major ones and they weren't even the first. People were saying the same thing in the 80s, it's not a question anymore
The marketplace has evolved to where slabbed coins have insurmountable advantages over most of their raw counterparts. Personal feelings or not, that’s the way it’s shaken out.
I've posted many times that the TPGs are the best thing that ever happened to coin collecting. And they are, they did more to - promote the hobby, encourage collecting, bring new people into the hobby, and help stabilize the hobby when it needed it the most than anything else has ever done ! And that is why I find it so sad that they changed so drastically and threw all of that out the window purely to maintain their economic existence.
Like all ships, they return to harbor some day; some with their cargo spoiled - time will tell. In the mean time I'll spend my money on ancients, not on pieces of plastic with someone else's "opinion" (read - NOT fact) on it.
Exactly, the continual expansion of online market places and sales venues will only continue to increase those advantages as well. There's always going to be people who are unhappy with it and fight it as is the case with everything, but those will be fewer and fewer as time goes on That's like waiting for typewriters to replace computers, there's nothing to wait and see the case has been settled and grading has been constantly expanding for decades.
Not really a true downgrade, as PCGS agreed with PR64. They merely changed the color designation from RB to BN.
It's still a downgrade in terms of pure grade. As mentioned earlier the holder change is an upgrade, but with copper Red < Red Brown < Brown. Going RD to RB would be considered a downgrade, same with RB to BN
I am aware of this. However it’s just the color, which is even more subjective than the numerical grade. It could also have changed after the coin was graded by ICG...
It's a pretty good bet that it did change color after being slabbed. There are more coins in PCGS slabs designated R and RB that are no longer R or RB than you can count ! Same thing goes for those in NGC, or any other slabs too.
