just want to ask since i am not sure and they are technically not a "real" U.S. coin

Do you need a Hobo nickel for a type set?

    I'll answer this one.

No. A Hobo nickel is not a Mint product. (But they are cool to own.)

True, unless your type set also includes Proof versions, SMS or other special releases that were not intended for circulation.

From all the replys you're getting on your type set threads, you should know by now that a type set is WHATEVER you make it out to be!!!!!!

heck, with all this scrapbooking stuff going on, I'm sure you could do a scrapbook where coins were part of the entire "work". So on one page, you have the hobo nickel, a twig from the tree it was whittled from and a picture of the guy who made it.....

I haven't seen a Hobo nickel whittled from wood. Are you confusing a Hobo nickel with a wooden nickel?

Yeah, problem is with proofs is that they can get very pricey for the 1800's coins....As far as SMS..I will have to do a search on that as i don't know what that is.

    Thanks for the help Hobo:)

true, but I am just trying to one one that that has a plan...not just a bunch of random coins that I just bought because I wanted to...that is basically what my type set would look like if I didn't have a it planed out.

a type set is ANYTHING in ANY configuration that you choose. If you decide to add a hobo nickel, so be it! There are no right or wrong answers. If you want to justify putting it in, then say that it originally was a mint product, and is used to show just how extreme Post Mint Damage can be.

BTW, SMS = Special Mint Set, and is usually put on specimen coins like the Botanic Garden nickel, or the 1965-67 Mint Sets.

See if this link works. This is a list of the PCGS registry type sets - with and without gold. You can pick one and modify it to suit your needs.
