Right, I have those on my GSAs in those slabs, too. Just the foam rubber or whatever that is in there.
Thanks for clearing that up for me Rzage. '72 was when he bought the coin. Probably bid $30 not $35 like I originally thought.
GSA Grade I had purchased many such GSAs and all were graded as "boarderline" MS63. I can not tell as the Obverse pic is a bit shaddowy where the contact marks are, but It is probably a full MS62 - maybe it would hit MS63, but I doubt it. Sorry.
I am guessing that it is a 63, but you may be absolutely right. It really doesn't matter. I don't intend to sell the coin since it is linked in my memory to my father who got me interested in this hobby! I like to think he would be very interested in the coins I have today and we could share some memories together.
great minds think alike we agree on the grade and the sentiment. i got some of my coins graded although they were not worth getting graded just because of memories
I've looked at alot of GSA dollars and I own a few. If the marks are only bag/luster marks, think it's a solid 64 and I think NGC would say the same. If the marks actually crease the coin it would go 62/63. Very nice coin, better than the 1884 I have.
On a side thought. Can someone tell me why most of the GSA morgans have beautiful reverse and obverse that looks like Rocky Balboa has been using them for practice?
It would to me. I'm a die-hard GSA collector...including coins, brochures, mint bags, even things as trivial as envelopes and original mailing perphinelia. As for the grade, I'd say a solid 64; with a possible VAM 8 "CC tilted left" Take a look here...www.vamworld.com....you'll probably need a 10x-20x loop to attribute properly. Actully there were 8 sales, all with there own minimums: GSA HOARD SALE 1: The Great Silver Sale GSA HOARD SALE 2: The Great Silver Sale Extension GSA HOARD SALE 3: The Coins Jesse James Never Got GSA HOARD SALE 4: The 30-Day Surplus Dollar Sale GSA HOARD SALE 5: The 1879-CC Silver Dollars GSA HOARD SALE 6: The Last of a Legacy GSA HOARD SALE 7: 90% Silver 100% History GSA HOARD SALE 8: The Last of the Carson City Dollars If the coin was purchased in 1972, it was most likely bought under "The Great Silver Sale" (which sold 82, 83, 84) and accepted bids until 1/31/73. The minimum bid was $30 per coin
Sure, because the contact marks on the reverse tend to be hidden in the devices. They are there, just harder to see.
The link doesn't work. Can you post another....I'd really like to understand the variety. Since I'm not a Morgan series collector, I am ignorant of the VAM varieties. Would this bring a premium if sold (and I don't plan on selling)? Maybe I will ask NGC to grade and attribute the variety. BTW - thanks to all for your comments. Edit: - here is the workable link: http://www.vamworld.com/1884-CC+VAM-8 It has a R3 factor!! It does appear my coin's CC tilts left slightly. I'll see if I can post a close up to see if anyone thinks it is.
