Folks, I need some help with this one. My mother-in-law gave me these 4 proof Lincolns at Thanksgiving. She orders Proof sets from the mint, so I’m guessing these were the bonus coins the Mint sent for free. Not sure why they weren’t with the Mint sets when she showed them to me. On the far right one only, Lincoln has a cameo appearance. On all 4, the shield looks cameo. Close up pics included of the 4 one on the right, obverse and reverse. The mint plastic bag has some scratches, but the coin is pristine. Is this a DCAM? Is it worthwhile to get this one graded? Our coin club sends batches of coins every month or so to ANACS. The per coin cost is about $15-$17 ($12 for the grading fee, plus a share of the shipping and handling). So the cost would be relatively low as far as having a coin graded goes. But, do I have to pay extra to ask them if it is a DCAM? I know ANACS wants the coin sent in a Saf T Flip. Should I keep the coin in its mint bag, and put the whole thing in a Saf T Flip so I don’t have to handle the coin? By the way, I bought my own 2019 Proof Set, and the bonus Lincoln looks the same as this one. Not sure why some look cameo and some don’t. Thanks for you input.
CAM or DCAM is considered part of the grade. You do not have to pay extra for the designation. Take it out of the plastic before you decide whether to submit it or not. There can be very minute flaws hidden by the plastic which may affect the grade. If it were mine, I wouldn't submit it for grading because Zincolns are too easily affected by temperature and humidity, and the condition of the coin can change over time. A TPG will not guarantee that it won't change. However, I would definitely remove it from the plastic and put it into an AirTite. The plastic offers no protection at all. ~ Chris
I heard or read somewhere — that’s a lot of help, I know — that those coins are not grading well as a whole.
Even with all the minimum grade of 70 submissions the PCGS pop report has over 4k 69s, more than 300 at 68 or below, and less that 1500 70s as of right now. The reverse proof version is just as bad too Those are really bad rates for a West Point product, but to be fair proof cents grade rather poorly in general
