We had an interesting customer in today. He won an ebay auction of ours. Living fairly close he drove in to pick it up. The coin? Most worn 82CC Morgan I've ever seen. I remember when we got it. A couple stopped in with a bunch of junk silver and a few Morgans. Think the boss paid $10 because it was SO worn. I took a look later and sure enough it was a CC so I showed it to the boss. Ended up on ebay and got just over $20. Well, it turns out the buyer has the lowest graded set by PCGS and he REALLY HAS WORKED hard for it. He figures this one should slab FR2 - a drop from AG3. He even got a plaque from PCGS for having the lowest graded set. This is not a cheap individual here folks. He is assembling the lowest grade set he can possible achieve. We have another customer that just completed his set of "original holed" Peace Dollars. Just shows you people have VERY different collecting tastes and challenges. I had a ag-3 g-4 morgan 80cc with some graffiti on it way back in the day that i received as payment for a job. As I recall its somewhere on the A&M campus in texas lost during a midnight dodge ball game.

Yes... but it's not a bad looking coin. I don't have a problem with "good, honest wear". It's outright damage I can't stand - scratches, graffiti... that sort of thing.
...and that's what his whole collection is about. It's all PCGS graded. He told me it really sucks to have a $12 coin body bagged for $16. Gotta wonder how many of his coins were "pocket pieces".
I wonder if he collects Early US Commemoratives. My example is the lowest grade I have ever seen for a Lafayette Dollar.
I would have paid $20 for that CC morgan too. Collecting is a far richer hobby than just looking for key dates and/or the highest grade you can afford.
I've accepted that I'm hoplessly attracted to circulated coins. If I was going to spend $100 on a coin, I'd rather have a circulated coin with some rarity than an uncirculated coin from the same series. I don't know any cure for this feeling.
I agree for financial reasons... I can never understand when a pic is posted of a MS-67 coin and someone comments "Oh, imagine the history...." What history? The thing probably hasn't had a gulp of fresh air in years. Been living in various safes and other dark, humidy-controlled environments.... Every coin should get to spend a couple months in a pine-scented drawer sharing space with that well-worn rabbit's foot, the ticket stub from last year's county fair and the creased 10 of Hearts playing card featuring a scantily clad lady.
I admit circulated coins might have more history , but think of the rare coins that wern't even minted for circulation , all the behind the seen haggeling to get it minted in secret , even coins minted for circulation and never leaving a mint bag , history is how you look at it . rzage:smile:hatch::hammer:
