It still does seem to be a nice coin, and with Heritage's description I kind wonder makes it "improperly cleaned"?
Simply, their opinion I'd say. I've seen coins with wilder toning than this one slabbed by PCGS, etc. It's not like someone put it in a plastic bag/coffee can and dropped in a Smoke-Bomb to color it up some, LOL... I've also seen coin worse that this conserved and then slabbed (NGC) with NO MENTION of the conservation... Take Care Ben
Tough to say. My sense is either overdipping followed by AT, or hairlines are hiding under that toning.....Mike
Here is the response from the seller after I asked him about the coin- "This is the way the coin came in my shop in an old album, along with other type coins. Not to sure about what you are talking about. This is a very nice coin, and I am not to sure about toning as stated in my description. If this is a coin from another auction I am not aware of it. regards, Larry Lucree Augusta Coin Exchange,LLC toll free # 1 877 210-****"
I spoke with the guy holding the auction on the phone. He seemed very reasonable. He said he would check it out.... We'll see if he does anything about the description. He said he paid $900 for the coin. It did sell at Heritage for $1150, but a coin dealer would usually not pay that much for a coin like this IMO. Too much risk.... not really wholesale type prices unless he believed the COIN was a solid MS specimen. I don't have any reason to think the guy is not telling the truth, but that is an awful small time horizon for all of that to happen in. 25 JULY 08 the auction ends.... 1-3 weeks shipping to owner. Owner cracks coin & puts it in type set album. Lies to coin dealer about where is came from. Then sells for $250 loss. Like I said Larry seemed like a nice enough guy, but this is really stretching it.
