I think that it is the same coin - I took the NCS one & put it on the right side of the OP's Look at the spots I highlighted-
Excellent forensics, Jaxsdad, Jason. Good eye Leadfoot. Also note in front of and just below the ear. IMO same coin.
Maybe so, the only thing which doesn't seem right (if they are the same) are the differing clasps, plus the 9s look different.
Actually the 1 and the 9 both look different, but unless those are die cracks instead of hairlines I would say there is too much pointing in the "they are the same coin" direction. Do you have a picture of the reverse????
Here is the link to the ebay listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&item=130242199970
I went to the Heritage site and looked at the pictures. I am about 99.9% sure this is the same coin.... There are just too many identifying marks in the exact same place for this to be a seperate coin. Unfortunately I believe this is the case.
Well - ya just never know. This could be a consigned coin and they did mention that were not sure about the toning(maybe just a cya thing). Sometimes good sellers update listings - just a thought.
I think you are correct there is no way these are different coins... on the reverse there is even evidence of a light fingerprint. You can see this in both pictures. I have no doubt you are correct. The dates do not look so much different once you see the heritage closeups as well. THIS ITEM WAS SOLD ON JUNE 25th 2008 @ Heritage. So the likliehood of the whole add being a contrived story is very likley. It may be that someone thought they could pass this off as an orginal on ebay. Luckily my bid is about half that of what it sold for at heritage about 1 month ago. Sweet catch!!!! I bet this ebay seller is going to be thouroughly flabergasted when he realizes that he got sniffed out.
Please by all means ask the seller some questions: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&item=130242199970 I have already reported this item. To me the stroy is suspect considering the coin came out of an "old album", yet was recently sold at Heritage on 25JUN08. Sounds like a tall tale to me.
Heritage's Description of the Coin 1819/8 50C Large 9--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. </I>O-102, R.2. The date shows a large, broad 9,the underdigit 8 is evident as a curved line closing the 9 overdigit, and all three Ts on the reverse are defective at the right bases. Cobalt-blue and purple toning flanks the light golden-brown center on the obverse, and the same color palette is randomly distributed over the reverse, though taking on less intense hues. Sharply detailed throughout, and devoid of mentionable abrasions. A few faint hairlines on the cheek show under magnification. For $700 this might still be a decent deal.
rhoggman, If it doesn't go too much farther in price than where it is now, I think you will have gotten a nice coin at a pretty good price. I do believe it's the same coin at the one from Heritage. I don't know why the 9s look different, but must just be an element of the images. Also, I don't get why on Earth people still put "this coin is from an old estate collection" in their ebay listings! For knowledgeable collectors, that throws up red flags left and right. If sellers would just describe coins honestly and say that it has had a cleaning, etc., I feel that buyers appreciate that and might actually bid more for it, instead of holding back because they're not sure about a coin. And, I firmly believe it would have done better in the NCS holder.
Agree, it's the same coin. But she has been cracked out so any opinions on cleaning, etc., by the NCS are only neat little historical side-notes now. When/If it's reholdered it MIGHT slab, who knows??? Take Care Ben
Very true bonedigger. In the ebay auction it looks nice, in the heritage auction it looks AT - just my opinion.
Wow Bud , at 1st I thought no , but the rim is identicle , and the scratch , :kewl:what are the chances having the same scrath in the same place , good catch .:kewl::whistle: rzage:smile:hatch::hammer:
