Is there a 1982 transitional error? From copper to zinc? Or is it free reign that 82 has copper and zinc pennies?

And are 1982 and earlier pennies worth more than one cent because they have more copper in them? I read somewhere that they are worth 2.4 cents.. are they worth keeping since 2 equals about 5 cents? Or is it false information?

    1952 – 1982 is 95% Copper and 5% Tin & Zinc; 3.11 grams
    1982 – Current is 97.5% Zinc and 2.5% Copper; 2.5 grams

The 7 Business Strike Varieties (8 total with the 1 rare one):

    LARGE DATE Philadelphia
    • 1982 Large Date Copper
    • 1982 Large Date Copper plated Zinc

    SMALL DATE Philadelphia
    • 1982 Small Date Copper
    • 1982 Small Date Copper plated Zinc

    LARGE DATE “D” - Denver
    • 1982 D Large Date Copper
    • 1982 D Large Date Copper plated Zinc

    SMALL DATE “D” - Denver
    • 1982 D Small Date Copper plated Zinc
    • 1982-D small date copper (1 or 2 known to exist). This is the one rare cent where all the fake youtube videos make one think they are easily found in pocket change.

There is also a 1982-S Large Date which is not included because it is a PROOF.

You'll probably want to stop using the sources you are currently using.

Avoid YouTube for learning new stuff. It is valuable once you know what is true and what isn't.

Avoid clickbait websites that state you can "get rich", "make money", "it's rare" which are mostly a page or so long. Use only *extensive* website and reference material.

If you get really exciting in short reading about a coin it's probably a clickbait website. Put it on your "do not read" list.

Technically pre 1982 cents are "worth" more than a cent, but IF you process the penny to "raw copper" form. You will spend MORE than the cent is worth to do this .. or something like that.

It is also ILLEGAL to melt copper cents to prevent this from occurring.
you can melt cents for certain things but to resell the material isn't one of them.

Lol I dont use sources. I dont have time. I own my own business and have way too much to do. I dont have time to watch YouTube videos haha. But when I do have time I use real information. Not kids making silly videos lol. But thanks for the info. I'm just going off of what is real, and what is out there and known. I'm not trying to get rich off pocket change. It's just something I do in spare time, hoping to find something valuable or cool to keep.

You shouldn't assume everyone is watching you tube or any other sources that you dont know if they are using or not lol... you know what happens when you assume.... you make an ass out of you and me

Forget about the value of the copper in copper pennies.
When you are allowed to melt them, you need copper to be
$6 a pound just to break even. Copper has never been higher than $4.63 ever,
and it is currently $2.55. It won't hit $6 anytime soon.
As for transitional errors, in 1982 Denver only made small dates in zinc, and yet
2 copper small date 1982-D cents have been discovered.
There are also later dates that are supposed to be zinc and they are copper.
1983 (1989?) and some others. Your odds are better to hit the lottery, but that's
    the scoop.

    That wasn't nice..

We have to assume. Because the majority of the time newbies here on CoinTalk do watch those videos. They make statements such as "I saw on YouTube"..

We are truly just trying to help you.

Yes it is false.. By the way you stated that you use real information.. What source would that be? Because it looks like it is no kind of real information at all.

    Peace :angelic:

That really is not the best source for coin information. Google information is constantly being edited to reflect better information.

That 2.4 price is from 2011.
Currently it is around 1.7 cents.
And again that is not taking into account that pennies are not Grade A copper.
Pennies are an alloy and you will receive 25% of the spot price for that.
The 1.7 cents is the Grade A spot price.

Just remember one thing. FORGET ABOUT THE MELT VALUE OF COPPER IN PENNIES. You won't even break even in 50 years.

There are plenty of people hoarding copper pennies. When you consider the time and expense of storage, transportation, etc. And then when they find out they are worth more at face value, Hello Coin Star and their 11% takeout. Yes it's true some are being sold slightly above face in large lots on EBay or wherever, but they are just selling them to another misinformed person who thinks they are going to make money melting copper. They aren't.

With all the misinformation on the web search engines many sites have about the same information as those videos that are posted on you tube. Do research and find reputable information.
