The United States Mint resumed sales of 2008 American Eagle Platinum Proof coins Thursday and the new prices are mind-blowing. One coin’s premium is marked up a whopping 63%. The popular one-ounce platinum coin is $796 higher than yesterday’s platinum price. What was the Mint thinking? Perhaps they were thinking that people will buy them AND they will? Ever notice that I don't EVER post my newest purchases from the Mint? Hmmmmm.....maybe because it's a crapshoot in most cases and I'd rather buy tried and true. Come to think of it Spock. Don't see you posting a lot about your latest mint purchases. JMHO everyone. clembo
Why did you buy it and you know darn well there's about a gazillion other things you can buy from the mint Spock. DId you pay over spot for the gold?
The supply of platinum is another story unlike gold. There are extremely limited supply of platinum with South Africa dominating at least 75% of current world supply, with the rest from Russia and other minor countries. Zimbabwe has a potential to add another 15% or so but at current political situation in Africa, it's not a pretty sight. The technical difficulty of mining platinum in South Africa has got to a stage that it's just too difficult to expand. Price wise, I don't see it as unreasonable.
Forgive me for sounding like a pessimist or a cynic, but the US Mint IMHO is in this for the money and only the money. I don't think they care about coin collectors and their love of coins when they sell products (today's Mint). Yes the mint does produce coins specially for collectors, such as, proofs, mint sets, commemoratives, just to name the obvious. But, specially today, these coin command a high premium over their face values...PROFIT for the mint! The mint wouldn't discontinue mintages unless they were sure the demand had died and production costs out weighed the profit return. I've learned to live without dealing with the mint. Actually I can't afford the mints prices. I'll wait and get them after they drop in demand and the prices falls, if they do that is. Keep on Collecting!!! Allen
They don't seem to be robbing me. They haven't gotten any of my money since 1975. You don't like the prices they are charging, don't buy.
I don't buy when I don't like the prices. But then again, I desperately wanted to finish my proof sets from 99 to 08, even if it was an outrageous price for the coins.
mint is out of hand the mint even delivered other customers return goods without making the goods look new. damaged boxes and coins. they just re-delivered to the next customer. don't buy from u.s. mint. and the mint also overcharges us.
Just don't buy them. In a year or two they will probably be available at a discount to the offer price.
That's why I only buy the silver Commemeratives once in awhile , the gold & platinum is to exspensive , and there are other coins I would rather spend my money on . rzage
