Early Commemorative Coins

A (mostly correct) M-1 Carbine (Inland 1943- Blue Sky Import). I dumped it right before the CMP announced they were releasing carbines.

The early commens have been an enigma and have taken an overall nosedive. Why I am not sure, but it is interesting. 18 months ago, an MS64 Roanake was going for $270 ask on the gray sheet. Now it has droppped to $220. The Columbia and Elgin commens have dropped too.

I guess this may be the time to buy. Maybe they follow the housing market, who knows. :smile

 

And like the housing market, it may be dependent on the area. Comms around my way are going strong and carrying some hefty prices. But some deals can be had like the last Texan one that I posted in the Texas thread. I got that for a price I would call my grey zone - not great, but not bad either. It was a fair price for the coin. My local dealer bought a near complete collection of early comms and he has broken the set up to be sold as individual pieces. Some were slabbed and some weren't. All the high end slabbed ones were sent away outside dealers. There is a New Rochelle one in his weekly auction that I am going after. PCGS MS64. It looks all that and then some. I fear it will go well over my bid, but I did bid strong on it so we will see. Hopefully, my competition will all be away on vacation.

 

So any luck in getting the New Rochelle half? That's one of my favorites. I am currently looking for a Delaware and Cincinnati in the MS63/MS64 range

 

Yeah I got it! I can't believe you remembered that. It was a very nice example and I really like it. Got it for well below greysheet MS64 price. Acutally, got it for well below XF price. I haven't had a chance to take pics of it yet, but once I do, I will get it up here. I don't have either the Cincinnati or the Delaware, but MS63/64 range would suit me just fine. I always try to pay MS60 prices or less. Let me know if you get those and post some pics!!!

The tower on the San Diego Denver strike can be weakly struck. That is not too unusual. Look closely at the mint mark to check for doubling. During my research of this coin, I have found that RPMs are very common for the Denver strike of that year. There were also some rumors of a D/S for this coin as well, since the first coins were struck in San Fran in 35, then Denver minted them in 36.

Yeah, I've been really into early commemoratives lately. My latest was the 1946 Iowa graded MS65. REALLY nice looking coin. I just love the design of most of these coins. They're just so beautiful it's hard not to like them.

Next up on the list is a 1935 or '36 Texas. Can't wait for that one!

Haven't checked the MM yet , but yours is a beauty , mines blast white like yours but lkie I asked the taller building is nowhere as nice as yours . BTW is there a premium for the repunched MM

There may be a very small premium, if any at all, for the RPM. If I remember what I read, unless someone is specifically looking for that variety it won't fetch any bit more. I have viewed just fewer than a dozen of the 36D and only found one other one with a fairly obvious RPM, but not as clear as mine.

A while back I was going to send it in to NGC for grading and attribution, but found out that in addition to the grading fee, you have to pay for the Variety plus fee. I felt that it wasn't worth it.

 

I decided to collect the Commems with a Virginia connection- turns out there are quite a few. Then I began to digress-- spotted a nice Au58 Isabella on Heritage- had to have that, then of course an Oregon Trail- just a great design- and I think I'll have to have a Conn. too, the oak tree design is great. The one I really had to swallow first before bidding was the Lynchburg- hard to find a less inspiring coin

Oh- beware of fake Isabella's and Lafayettes- they are heavily faked and some of them are pretty good. I've also heard of fake Grants. FYI.

 

I couldn't agree with you more. I am born and raised in Conn and I went to school at Lynchburg College so I have always wanted these two. Earlier this year I purchased a Lynchburg - MS63-64 details, but appears to have some corrosion on the reverse. I got it for a ok price - not a steal, but not full price either. The Conn is an expensive one to get in higher grades, but hopefully will have that some day too.

My wife and I both like early commems, but some we like more than others and others we just don't like. They are at a decent price overall except if you are trying to buy a Hawaii commem.

 

And I think the Hawaiian is an especially nice design.. stop me before I buy again!!

My high school used to play E.C. Glass in football; that was the only time I had heard his name until I saw the commemorative. I believe he had a distinguished career in Congress, and was the first living person depicted on an official US coin (please correct me if I'm wrong). OT: I'll be meeting my Mom at Lynchburg this weekend to go to the Peaks of Otter, probably visit the D Day memorial on Bedford..
