Here is some pictures of a possible 1943 Copper Cent that we found from my Aunt coin collection that was inherited by my daughter. We came across this maybe copper 1943 cent. Could anybody let me know if it is a fake or real. It has already passed the magnet test.
Well ranger, I am not an expert and not even close. For your sake I hope it's real but to me the 4 and the 3 doesnt look right so I think it was altered.
Take a magnet--if it go to the magnet its a fake...it may be one even if it doesn't go to it but that is the best way to find out. Speedy
Duh...I also think the 3 and the 4 looks funny but I guess I might send it to ANACS and see what they think...I will cost a little less than PCGS or NGC--about $15-$20. Speedy
When I use even the strongest of magnets there is zero attraction. I'm still questioning whether the 3 is real or fake.
Well this is just my opinion as I said earlier I am not an error person but. The 3 in "43's", the bottom tail points down. Yours point level to up. Doesnt look like damage so I would guess the 4 was the altered number.
It would more likey be the 4 is fake...it could be copper and have a 19_3 and they change the other number to a 4... Speedy
I still cannot make out if the 4 is real or fake. I cleaned up the coin and toke two more pictures. One at 10 power and one at 60 power using my daughters Digital Blue Microscope.
Unless you know for sure you will always wonder if it WAS. $15-$20 with ANACS is inexpensive verification.
Well...If it is a real one...the cleaning hurt it...most of the time cleaning is a big NO NO--BUT I'm going to say that it looks 100% like a Fake...now I'm not an expert...I've only collected for 4 years and will never know everything--but the to the right of the 4 you can see some lines in the medal...well that is what the fake cents I've seen looked like. You might still send it to ANACS or ask a dealer you trust. Speedy
I'm no expert on Lincolns, but wouldn't the initial copper pieces in 1943 have come from the Mother Mint - Philadelphia? This piece appears to have an "S" mint mark. Have there been any verified copper pieces from San Francisco?
Have to agree with you cush, here's a LINK to a great pict of a pristine 1943 steel on coinfacts.com The 3 definitely points down on the real deal.
I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on any of the major websites dealing with U.S. cents and other copper coins, but a 1999 U.S. mint press release on 1943 copper cents seems to imply that all then known examples were from one mint - which would be Philly. Either way, that "4" reminds me of the one on a four-dollar bill I saw once.
The coin in question is an altered date coin. The 3 has been altered, probably by removing the left side of the 8 on a 1948 S cent. Th cshape of the 3 on the coin in question is completely wrong for a real 1943. it should have a long tail curving downward. Genuine 1943 copper cents are known from all three mints. Most of them are from Philadelphia, there are four or five from San Francisco and a single specimen from Denver.
Welcome to the forum giladzuc. You are making a positive statement about the coin in question which is directly oppposite to the opinions expressed by myself and others with many, many years of collecting experience. May I inquire what your experience and background in coin collecting might be?
