I'm not sure of the best way to do this. I'm making piles of all my lincoln cents by year and then picking out what I think look the best of each mint to put into my folders.

How do you decide which ones to put into folders?

the best way to do it is to first get an idea of how to grade what yoru collecting. Buy a book that teaches you the basics of what to look for, as you get better, picking out the best examples to put in your folder will be easy. The red book gives some generic ways to tell a grade, it was how i started grading, but i will admint, i never got much better then what the red book says lol

good luck, and remember, you can always post pics and ask the many experts here for opinions!

I agree with Daggarjon, rzage and wheatman and would like to add... If you are using whitman albums and fill it with coins you currently have and then upgrade more than once or twice, the coins have a tendency to fall out. Also, it is very time consuming to pop out the coins to look at both sides and compare to the possible new ones. I find it more satisfying to wait and try to get coins in as close a grade as possible. You might not finish quickly, but will be able to grade better and album will be more uniform. (JMO) Do whatever makes you happy and keeps U interested.

The folders that I have you can see both sides of the coin. I bought the more expensive ones (about $25 each). They have a plastic sheet on both sides of the coin. I think it is whitman though.

How to pick a coin from a roll for a set

Your talking about a Dansco Album they are pretty much the best.

To pick a coin from a roll for an album I do this

    1. Wear gloves:hail: Put all the coins on a clean surface obverse up

    2. Look for scratches:hammer:, spots:kewl:, dirty coins:mad:, weak stamp:hatch:s etc and remove them.

    3. Flip them all to reverse and do the same:headbang:

    4. Usually whats left is pretty nice pick one

It sounds like what you have is an album. A bit different than the one sided folders, but definitely much better. Like the others said, learning to grade will help you alot.
