One area of coins I lack is Nabatean coinage. I only have one bronze coin & it was from a secret Santa here on CT several years ago. Recently one was listed on ebay, for as usual for me, an excellent price. I know Nabatean silver coins are a bit scarce, to begin with. This coin was freshly listed & I quickly purchased it. Less than $37 total after tax and free shipping. I don't know if anyone here other then @John Anthony would know the year since there are some marks to the left of the obverse. Since he isn't posting much, hopefully someone else may know? Rabbel II, with Gamilat (70 - 106 A.D.) AR Drachm O: Laureate and draped bust of Rabbel II right; date in legend R: Veiled and draped bust of Gamilat right Petra mint 3.07g 16mm Meshorer, Nabataea 147–61; DCA 985 And for thread's sake, here is the copper coin from secret Santa that is keeping it company. Malichus II & Shuqailat II (40 - 70 A.D.) Nabataean Kingdom Æ Unit O: Jugate busts of Malichus & Shuqailatt right R: Crossed Cornucopia 1. WKLM 2. YQS 3. TL from r. to l. MLKW / SQY / LT = Maliku / Shuqailat 19mm 2.51g SNG XI#I444
Congrats! I've been trying to join the Nabataean club but just don't know where to start. You picked a wonderful starting point!
@Mat ....Nice pick up! These silvers are always difficult to find cheaply....You got it for a great price....Sorry I can't help you with the date..Pretty little bronze too... I only have one... Nabataean Kingdom. Aretas IV (Haritat), with Shaqilath..9BC-40AD AE unit Petra mint. Obverse..Jugate draped busts of Aretas and Shaqilath (wife) right symbol in front (S?) Reverse..Crossed cornucopias, Nabataean script (spelling Ruler and wifes names) in 3 lines, above, between and below the horns. Aretas name in Nabataean is 'Haritat' Spelt 'HRTT' and his wife 'Shaqilath' spelt 'SQYLT'
Don't have one in silver, but have a few in bronze. Here's an example. Nabataean Kingdom. Petra. Aretas IV, with Shaqilat 9 BC-AD 40. Bronze Æ 18 mm., 3.62 g.
Nice coin- the portraits are less 'cartoonish looking" than most I've seen on this type. Thanks for the information on the script in the attribution.
@Carl Wilmont ...Your welcome and here's a thread you might find helpful.. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-few-additional-nabataean-coins.348946/#post-3793983 btw...Nice coin!
I think you have the obverse/reverse in the wrong order, typically the veiled bust is the reverse. The 2 bust's resemble Meshorer 48 (Aretas IV), but the inscription does not match up. I had a difficult time finding my drachm and conceded it was unpublished. There are a few scattered papers out there that are showing new types. Aretas IV Mint: Petra AR Drachm RY 20 to 29, 11 to 20 AD Obvs: Laureate head of Aretas right. Revs: Jugate busts of Aretas, laureate, and Shaquilat, draped. 13x14mm, 3.50g Ref: Meshorer, Nabataea -; Schmitt-Korte - Note: Appears to be unpublished in the standard references with regnal year 20 and different obverse legend.
I have no silver and do not know where the legends begin on the silver types. Are they base in or base out? On my Aretas IV and Shaqilat AE below, is there a letter (looks like pi) near the king's neck or is that part of his clothing?
