One area of coins I lack is Nabatean coinage. I only have one bronze coin & it was from a secret Santa here on CT several years ago.

Recently one was listed on ebay, for as usual for me, an excellent price. I know Nabatean silver coins are a bit scarce, to begin with.

This coin was freshly listed & I quickly purchased it. Less than $37 total after tax and free shipping.

I don't know if anyone here other then @John Anthony would know the year since there are some marks to the left of the obverse. Since he isn't posting much, hopefully someone else may know?

And for thread's sake, here is the copper coin from secret Santa that is keeping it company.

Congrats! I've been trying to join the Nabataean club but just don't know where to start. You picked a wonderful starting point!

Don't have one in silver, but have a few in bronze. Here's an example.

Nice coin- the portraits are less 'cartoonish looking" than most I've seen on this type. Thanks for the information on the script in the attribution.

I think you have the obverse/reverse in the wrong order, typically the veiled bust is the reverse. The 2 bust's resemble Meshorer 48 (Aretas IV), but the inscription does not match up. I had a difficult time finding my drachm and conceded it was unpublished. There are a few scattered papers out there that are showing new types.

    Aretas IV
    Mint: Petra
    AR Drachm
    RY 20 to 29, 11 to 20 AD
Obvs: Laureate head of Aretas right.
Revs: Jugate busts of Aretas, laureate, and Shaquilat, draped.
    13x14mm, 3.50g
    Ref: Meshorer, Nabataea -; Schmitt-Korte -
Note: Appears to be unpublished in the standard references with regnal year 20 and different obverse legend.

I have no silver and do not know where the legends begin on the silver types. Are they base in or base out? On my Aretas IV and Shaqilat AE below, is there a letter (looks like pi) near the king's neck or is that part of his clothing?
