If there is one there are bound to be plenty more at the rate of speed the coins are made and/or until the die is taken out of production and serviced, if possible. I know @Fred Weinberg does not normally do minor errors but maybe he might chime in.
Interesting, reminds me of a diechip. How many dies exhibit this? Is it a progression on the same die?
It's a very minor and small die chip, based on the photos, and I doubt the Die was pulled because of it - therefore, there are probably 10,000 to 50,000 pieces (or more) of them. This type of minor die chip is very common on many many quarters over the decades. Not rare, not significant, but congrats on the good eyes. Have fun with them sir, but don't get too excited about monetary gain.
Old49er, I had the same thought- die chip or related damaged die. As the die filled the bird gradually went from eagle size smaller. Were it not for the fact that multiple of them were found I would not have bought any. Now I'm into the hunt and have personally found three 'Osprey'. I'm skeptical about that extra branch variety but when the 2nd one arrives we'll see. I'm leaning toward damage on that one, but the birds are definately not. Non circulated, clean from BU rolls with gloves to 2x2. Any dust irregularities are between the camera and 15x Loupe or the loupe and the 2x2
@PacificFleet- Did you personally name these anomalies or are you getting this from somewhere/someone?
Yeah, if there are that many then we have a variety coin. I'm not the discoverer, but I'm #2 or 3 on that list. We'll see how this thing goes. It's a coin with an epic name. [River of No Return Wilderness]
Original posted name for find is "Bird on the Tree Error", but after finding the variations I've added the names. Nomenclature is based on actual birds of prey found in the River of No Return Wilderness.
Documentation other than sales data on ebay, nope. But I bring these to the table here because as of yet I know of none graded with naming contrary. This thread is my intent to start documentation. Coins at last check were still available from the other 2 individuals on ebay. Under ATB and Errors [ungraded] sections.
Eh, IMO it sounds more like a marketing hype than anything else. “In God We Rust” Kansas and “leaky bucket” Nebraska quarters come to mind. At least those are a little bigger and easier to spot. I don’t see much interest in something like the RonR “birds”. But...I’ve been wrong in the past
