This would be news indeed if the new registry also admitted ANACS and/or ICG-graded coins. Didn't NGC's existing registry allow PCGS coins, until they decided to stop, but then they started again? What are the big differences between this registry and the existing one?
Aside from possibly new software that probably would have happened anyways if it even is new, basically nothing aside from marketing. You get to say it's the ANA registry and have a symbol if you're a member.
While I like the idea (and have long advocated for it), what's the difference between the NGC and ANA registries? It seems like NGC is footing the bill, and the entire NGC registry is just going to be ported to the ANA registry. Is there going to be anything that sets this new ANA registry apart? Will this new ANA registry mean that the NGC registry will be changing? (perhaps going back again to NGC only?) Will the new registry accept coins besides PCGS and NGC? I think including ANACS and ICG would be high on many collectors lists. And, perhaps most significantly given NGC's recent underwhelming trend: will this new Registry be introduced fully-featured, with working technology, or will it be some half-baked new gizmo that limps alongside the old thing? I like the announcement, but I'm skeptical.
Hope they release more info on this. If they allow mix slabbed world coins (pcgs, ngc, etc) this would be great as thats what I collect
Does anybody really think this is more than a re-skinning of the NGC registry with a couple of ANA logos?
PCGS's world grading would have to stop being a full grade looser than NGC before that would be good news.
I'm really, really hoping this is something more. I'm really, really disappointed that NGC is developing this and sponsoring this for the ANA. I'm hoping that NGC gets it started and ANA can evolve this into the registry that we all hope and dream of. However..... it's in NGC's interest to not do that.... If the ANA registry becomes what I want it to, I'd drop NGC like a hot potato.
Well said. I love it when I come late to a thread and someone else has pretty much said exactly what I would have written. Saves me the typing and the typos.
It was NGC marketing genius. The NGC registry IS going to be the ANA one, at least to start. The NGC registry is going to be pre-populated into the ANA one, and NGC is running it, so there will be a big head start there. In fact their return to allowing PCGS into their registry suddenly seems premeditated and very calculating. Now, will they be doing the world coins right away or not? And will there be PCGS coins allowed on the world side after all?
From the announcement it doesn't sound like the ANA will really be doing anything other than lending their name/"approval" to it just like with NGC being the official grading service. Would anyone really be surprised if this new ANA set disappeared if NGC was the underbidder for the official ANA grading service or decided to stop stroking the check for that? I wouldn't
