The true story (as it happened) was this. My customer was a younger gentleman and he came to my window with a large paper bag of coins for me to run through the machine. So, I carried them to the back where our coin machine is. The teller in the window next to me was helping the lady who had a handful of plastic film containers with coins and the roll of half dollars. As I was walking to the back I saw he was too with considerably less coins to run so I said he could go first (because I was going to take several minutes-at this point I had no idea what he had). He sat the coins on the counter and began to dump the plastic film containers into the machine which had state quarters in them which she had saved. As he was doing so...I noticed the old roll and picked it up out of curiosity. I peeled back one end and saw a walker. So, I peeled the other...and there was another walker. I told him not to run them, just to set them aside for me. Knowing I was a coin collector, he asked me if they were worth anything...I told him yes, at least $10 per coin if they were all walkers (I had no idea what was throughout the roll). The lady's total "coin run" (as we call it) was about $57...$47 were the quarters run through the machine and $10 for the roll that was set aside. I ran the coins for my customer and by the time I was done with that...the lady was gone.

I later withdrew $10 from the teller in the window next to me and he gave me that roll. I knew what the coins on the end of the roll were while the lady was still in the bank (although she was not my customer), I asked that teller to save them for me and he did so. Before I bought the roll, he opened it up and confirmed they were all walkers. My job is to perform the transactions I am asked to do, and that's what I did. I know there are people here who think I should have said something, but I chose not too...I simply did my job. Should I inform every customer that deposits a star note of what it is and its potential value, or should I just accept it and buy it later if I want to?

I don't feel I need to defend my actions, as far as I am concerned I did my job. Its pretty easy to stand on a soap box and say shame on me, but I'll bet most people would have done the same thing. And truthfully, if she came in with another roll...I would do the same thing.

At least they are going into a collection where they will be well taken care of.

Don't feel guilty Ricky. It's like the guy who finds a Van Gogh at a garage sale folded up in an old clock. Sweet find....enjoy it.

If I see someone drop a wallet, then I pick it up and keep it, am I a good citizen for cleaning up litter?
    Enjoy the coins.

Alright, first off, nice find I guess. But, I'm on the side where I feel you should have let the lady know before she left. We can go play the "what if" game, but that's all it is, what if.

Maybe she should have learned a bit more about the coins, but the fact is odds are pointing to she didn't know much about them, if anything at all. Odds are she didn't look at the coins. Now the argument about cherry picking from a dealer is a whole different scenario IMHO. Totally different IMHO if you look at it.

But, I'm done now. I'm not going to put you down for what you did, as what good would that do IMHO? Okay, I'm done, flame away.

Reputation on both sides of the table is important. I see both sides of the equation. 5 years ago my favorite aunt took 3 of 4 coffee cans full of old change my grandfather had thrown back to the bank and deposited them. This was the day after he passed. My grandfather was not a collector. This was mainly spare and interesting to him change over th e years. The one can she missed, I went thru. Inside that can were 3 peace dollars, around $40 face silver, various wheats, a few war nickels, couple buffs, etc. This happened in small town Iowa at a bank my grandparent's had used for 50 years. My grandmother hated the cans, and distraught, told my aunt to do so.

Was it the bank's responsibility to call another relative? Probably not. Could they have? certainly.

I know people who go " coin roll hunting". they go to banks and buy 100s of $ worth of 1/2 dollars, search them and do pretty well.I dont myself but know someone who bought $220 in rolls from bank and all were 40% and 90% silvers.

Trying to justify a bad choice by saying you were just doing your job is a bunch of BULL. If I am not mistaken a bank teller is held to a very high standards and morals. Your job is not to just make bank transaction, but you are also responaible for protecting Bank and Customers assets. Your actions are not only wrong but could be illegal. You use your knowledge of coins and your position at the bank to make a financial profit at a customer's expense.

I have read all the replies and have formed an opinion.

Seeing as richie said the coins will go in to his collection rather than him selling them on to make a profit himself it is not that bad.

I disagree. I'm not putting him down, but the fact remains that before the lady left the bank, he saw that they were obviously worth more than face value, but didn't make an attempt to let her know. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. We can't play "what if" or "maybe". We can just do what was, and what is. This is just me and my opinion on this matter, and please Richie or anyone else, don't take me as flaming you, as I am just voicing my opinion.

Guys, I gotta jump in here and point this out. Richie tells us in this thread how he acquired a bunch of silver halves and suddenly, he becomes morally corrupt because he should have "informed" his customer of her potential wealth. In another thread which talks about a lady who jumps at the oportunity to sell her gold and in the process gets completely ripped off. The thread was relatively new so there weren't that many posts, but already some people were jumping in saying that she was an idiot for not doing her homework. You can't have it both ways. I find nothing wrong with what richie did. If you don't know what you got, then you didn't know what you had. That last phrase is trademarked and licenced by me - so flame on brothers, flame on.
