What do you guys make of this 1978 Lincoln Cent i found in a box of pennies? Big lump on the obverse that couldnt have come from the penny itself cuz there isnt any damage on the back to make it and the penny is still the proper thickness and everything that it should be.
You sure??? Cuz wouldnt it have affected both sides equally? Plus ive never seen a penny melt like this, especially just on one side
Those two dots above LIBERTY are the clue. When welding is done, there is metallic spatter, and where it lands it melts into or onto that surface. If someone hit this with a MIG welder, or even a small-gauge rod, it would leave spatter just like this. It could even be solder, but that drips more than spatters. I had to scrape off a lot of this when I worked as a shipfitter / steelfitter in the ‘70’s.
Take something sharp and dig into it! I would if it will be silver solder When you braise with silver and brass it will sometime will take the color of other melted metals. Damage anyway it goes It’s one of those esty coins!!
