I usually post on the Ancients site as that is what I mostly collect, along with some medieval coinage. I just uncovered a smallish silver coin in a batch of my old culls and I am intrigued by what I have and even more so on why and how I obtained it, apparently some time ago. it looks to me like a late Medieval or early modern Spanish piece, maybe the Spanish Netherlands. In diameter it is just a bit larger than a US quarter and weighs in at 3.8 grams. It appears to be silver but from its dark color may be billon. I can make out some of the inscription. On the obverse is a monarch looking from his clothing as circa 1600. I think the name is Phillipus iiii. On the reverse is a shield with some kind of heraldry and what looks like Hispaniarum (rex?). A number 16 appears to the right of the shield and to the left the letters M over Y. Any help with this, perhaps a Krause number would be appreciated and if it really belongs in the World Coins threads I apologize.
Yes, that appears to be it. I wonder how and why I acquired this coin as I usually don't collect later than the High Middle Ages. Thanks for providing all that information. It will make a nice gift to a young collector.
