I would say no and PCI didn't think it was cleaned either (back when they were more conservative graders).

Not sure, since it is counterfeit...

That's a monster coin in a monster grade, to be sure, but -- those field lines look an awful lot like scratches in these images, and I don't know what in the world is going on with the cheek. What's the in-hand interpretation?

Not exactly sure myself. There is some graininess on the portrait but the field lines look more like slide marks in hand. Hardly noticeable in hand but certainly noticeable blown up like that.

I think the lines are from a fresh polishing of the dies and come with the strike. The lines are all on the high surfaces of the die and they all end at the portrait. You see this a lot in the proof like Morgans. Beautiful coin!

Is there a way to tell if it's an original racketeer or one that's been recently plated?

@Islander80-83 Here is my 1885. It is very rough and just as given to me 1948. I have often wondered if the date is just screwed up from being treated bad. It looks like damage to me. Comments are welcome. 1885 V Nickel Obv.jpg 1885 V Nickel Rev.jpg

My personal Favorite. Only have obverse image now but will update, not that there’s much to see.

Thanks for posting it. Unfortunately, she had a tough life. She's well circulated. You're fortunately to have one, many folks don't.

Here is the 1883 W/O Cents that my aunt gave me at the same time. Poor strike, but a keeper.
