Coin collecting question I'm a collector who happened upon a coin site that had some coins I wanted for my collection. Then I spotted their policy about not shipping outside the U.S. Has this something to do with the "repatriation" of coins back to their origin countries, such as what Russian collectors are doing?
mostly its paranoia but sometimes (cyprus) rules ( india) customs and other regulation apply what site was it
Hey. Love the username. I've shipped outside the US once and it happened by accident. I said I would only ship to the lower 48 and some guy in Mexico City won the auction without reading. He sent payment quickly so I just decided to go through with it. It's a little more hassle filling out the extra paperwork. Some maybe just don't want to deal with it. I would think if you found something you really couldn't live without, somebody around here would be a middle man for you and send it to you, if you paypal them.
I was planning on giving some coins & stamps to someone in India , will I have any problems , meaning will he get them . rzage
Can't recall the site's name, but if they don't want my 100's of PayPal dollars for just one order they're certainly not valedictorians in the business acumen department.
I wouldn't call myself a huge seller but I rarely ship outside the U.S. as it is a hassle to me. I don't accept Paypal either and that's one reason. I have shipped to Canada, France, Korea and Thailand WITH THE UNDERSTANDING that I accept U.S. cash for these transactions. Now at work we ship worldwide. Of course we sell a lot more world stuff there as well. Usually goes off without a hitch but I'm glad I'M not in charge of shipping. Have you asked any of these sellers about making an exception? I sent a lot of stuff to Thailand because the potential buyer asked me BEFORE he bid. Never had a problem once we got rolling. clembo
In most cases, not. When going across national boundaries, it's a lot more difficult dealing with problems if they arise, just like it's more difficult to deal with someone across country than someone down the street. Almost all my deals have gone well. The only time I've had one not end with satisfaction was out of country - in this case, UK. The few stateside problems all worked out. If I were to deal outside the US, Canada would be #1. Yep. It's just a little funkier, and not everyone wants to mess with it.
Well, I don't know about that. It's reasonable to not want to ship internationally. Some do, some don't.
One of th ebiggest problems with shipping overseas is that you cannot insure things. And with no insurance, it the buyer claims he never got the coin - the the seller has problem. And it's a problem he can't solve without it costing him. That's the usual reason.
Lots of folks are scared to deal with shipping out of the US. Extra steps and the proof of delivery issues are more than some wish to deal with. I can't blame those that just don't wish to deal with it.
He very well may not. I'm helping a guy in India acquire a coin and he strongly advised me not to mail it. I'm going to send it to a relative here in the States who will carry it back with him when he visits home in a few months.
Non-international shipper sites should learn that North AMERICA includes CANADA Consider that, because with the strong Canadian dollar, we're more likely to buy than before. I understand all the arguments about the paperwork, insurance etc. but I don't think Canada is as red-tapey as the U.S. and its Homeland Security apparatus etc. Pretty darn measly worldview if they consider Canadians not worth the bother of doing business with. Coin collector brotherhood... Phooey.
in my experience and i have lost hundreds of dolalrs worth of shipments with the post office you are playing the lottery with fedex ups it will get there but the guy will have to pay duty
i am going to send you my million dollar shipments from the us so you can send it to me overseas. it will give you an opportunity to tellme that i dont know anything about coins yet
Don't be so bitter There ARE many sellers that ship to the U.S. AND Canada. Also as I stated earlier asking a seller for an exeption can go a long way. Since I have been on CoinTalk I have shipped to Ontario and Alberta. If you don't believe me PM Snaz. Sent him a bunch of $2 notes. Want a real kicker though? I have had ONE check bounce in the past 10 years. It was from Canada for a $5 item. Lost my butt on that one LOL. As stong as the Canadian Dollar is now those of us that don't take Paypal or sell a ton it's STILL a risk. Send me U.S. cash and I'll send all day but if it doesn't get there......
Oh yeah, I just remembered. I sent a coin to Canada and it never showed up. I sent a replacement and it arrived promptly.
Also if he said "over seas" Canada shares a land border with the USA and that to me atleast is not overseas. USA and Canada are very low red tape when it comes to shipping, so I'd ask him/her if they would make an exception to Canada.
I havent sent anything overseas. but I've made purchases from the UK, Israel, and Russia. everything was fine...
Right, and another reason why I hardly ever buy from the US any more. From here in Germany I can ship coins insured (Wertbrief) to various countries. Well, not possible to the US - actually it works with a limited number of destinations only anyway. Some vendors (most professional dealers, I think) have some third party insurance, but that does probably not pay off for occasional eBay sellers. Add that to payment and customs problems, and I'm better off when buying from sources in Euroland. Other people's mileages may vary, also depending on what you collect ... Christian
I buy from all over the world, in the last two days I have recieved items from Thailand, Canada, USA, China and I very raerly have a problem as for paperwork all you have to do is stick a customs docket on the back of the envelope and tick a couple of box's As for the insurance issue get the buyer to give a undertaking in writting not to claim for missing goods as long as you can provide some proof of posting. I allways ask if a seller will ship to the UK and I allways check the shipping costs even if they have them listed just to double check.
