Why is there a question about currency in the coin collecting merit badge questions? "Identify the people depicted on the following denominations of current U.S. paper money: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100."
GREAT THREAD CLINKER! We have a 14 year old "intern" at the coin shop I work at. Guess what he's working on? Yup! The merit badge and what better place for him to earn it! clembo
Wow. Cool! If my kid could earn one of those I'd be very proud. I've covered 90% of that but not enough to earn the badge. Foreign coins haven't interested me yet. I'm foreign illiterate. That's a lot of criteria. I think you'd be a long time waiting to find a Susan B. Anthony or Sacagawea dollar in circulation. I've never been handed either in my life. Only place I've found them is at a bank or the change machine at work.
I got my merit badge too when I was 12. I can still remember going to the coin shop to buy a 1958 Franklin Half to complete the set. I then taped all my 1958 coins to a sheet of construction paper (I know, but they never mentioned tape damage in the handbook!) and put it into a display folder, which I still have to this day. Original tape and all.
When I got my badge, one of the requirements was to collect each denomination coin from the year of your birth. Guess they changed that one.
andycook Good question.... Can anyone shed light on this requirement? Is it because "scriptology" is a subcategiry of "Nunismatics" like "exonumia?" Clinker
Vess1 I thought that too, but as I suspected, some Coin Talk members had earned one during their Boy Scout years... Clinker
Yes, I do. I have all of my BSA badges along with other souviniers (sp.) that I collected when I was a Scout. I still have my birth year set that I put together to get the badge, too. Some of the coins aren't in very good shape, though!! lol.
davdo Good for you! Since my retirement, I've been collecting my Birthyear (1935) coins. I collect only silver, but all countries.... Clinker
