I have been searching for a 2005 "In God We Rust" error quarter, so any time I get a 2005 quarter I set it aside. I almost tossed this one back into circulation, but I am glad the I did not. On the Obverse of the coin the upper part of the letter B in LIBERTY is filled in and protruding, as well on the Reverse of the coin the 6 in the 1863 is filled in and protruding. It does not look like post mint damage, like someone tried to fill it in. I have searched for a while but to no avail, so I turn to my fellow collectors for wisdom about what happened to the coin as well as if there is any possible value.

Die Chip. Worn Die strike issue.

    Die Chip also.

    Both are common. Nothing major.

It's really not a significant error. Just a minor struck through grease issue. Folks on ebay turned nothing into something. It's called marketing.
That issue should not have any kind of premium.

I know I just think it would be fun to have a quarter that says IN GOD WE RUST.

At this point wouldn't you call it a variety?

I guess that military types might prefer "IN OD WE TRUST". ~ Chris;)

If you look at the 55 poor mans DDO it is considered a variety, yet it is only die deterioration. My point is that depending on how many were struck before the debri was either cleaned or fell out of the die face. Some of these as quirky as they are do become a variety. Another example is the 1952 winged D. These are all considered errors, yet at the same time a variety. Whether or not the TPG's slab them.

Not saying that the IGWR quarter should be admonished.
Lets look at the 22D no D. Dies 1,3,4 all were created from a grease filled die.
The no D is labeled by the TPG's as a variety.

When I see it on the cover of CoinWorld magazine or see it being sold by Fred Weinberg then maybe I will change my view about it ;)

Welcome to the neighborhood Gecko99. DDD can produce a lot of oddities on coins and that's what I believe you have. NAV, no added value, but if you like it, keep it. That's what collecting is all about, otherwise it would be called something else. Keep looking and reading.

One persons trash is another persons treasure. I collect minor doubled die coins and love it.
