    Howdy fellow coin peeps, :thumb:

I ran across a weird looking 1883 IHC that has the following deformities on the obverse:

    Stretch Marks everywhere
    Doubled Profile
    Doubled Feathers on Headdress
    Doubled Legend

What causes these deformities and what are they called?

Although it seems rather improbable, my first thought was counterfeit. The indian looks "wrong".

Can you please post a closeup of the lettering/doubling?

p.s. "stretch marks" = flow lines = die wear. Although I don't follow this series closely, that's probably the most worn die I've ever seen in an IHC.

Considering it has a sunburst pattern on the stretch marks, I doubt that would explain it. The only thing that explains it is fatigue/stress in the minting process.

The doubling I'm seeing on the letters looks to be Longacre doubling.

At first I was only looking at the area in front of Libertys' forehead , looking at the closeups , you're right it couldn't be corrosion .

I came across this when I was trying to find a IHC to use to show another member how close-up the shots need to be to show detail good enough to make a determination of whatever is "wrong" with the coin. This one happened to be in decent shape, with luster still remaining, so I took some pics and when I pulled them up on my computer, I about pee'd myself. But I am a toad. :D

Very interesting toad! More than likely the coin was just struck wrong.

What I cannot show in the pics, is around the headdress, where the feathers stick out and around the edges of all the feathers, it's sunken. If you look close, you can see it but I haven't been able to show it in a pic yet. I'm still playing with it to see if I can get it to show in a pic.

Ps: Here's one shot of the headdress but it still doesn't show the sunken effect around it but it does show something. Be sure to click on the "!" above the pics to enlarge them, since I did not restrain the size so you could get a closer look. :kewl: It also shows the letter doubling of the letters in that area. :D

I also think I forgot to mention the die crack on the reverse, through the arrows:

We have a thunderstorm rolling through now so I had to use artificial lighting to get the shot close-up so if it looks "weird" it's the lighting. ;)

I'm thinking the die was toast. It's a cool looking cent.
You might post it here Toad.http://www.fly-inclub.org/talk/index.php
It might take a while but Rick Snow and others jump in with great answers. It's crazy what a person can learn about a coin when they start taking images.

I agree with that and I also think it may have stuck in the reverse die and was struck a second time on the obverse with a slight shift. In hand, you can see the doubling everywhere and the stretch marks could be a result of the double, or even possibly, triple striking.

I already sent pics to them but I'll check out that link also, to see what's there. :kewl:
