I was wondering if anyone has heard from Steve McBride at Incitatus coins in St. Johns, Newfoundland. It has been five days since St. John’s first declared a state of emergency after a monster blizzard gusting up to 170 km/h dumped more than six feet of snow on the city in a day with 15 foot high drifts. Hope you are doing ok Steve!!! You're the best! You know it's bad when the snow rings your doorbell.
I do not drink much beer during the Winter months. But, from May till end of September, I make it a point to pack 4 Coronas in my ice box every day at work. Makes those 14 hour days a bit easier to take when temps hit 26-34 degrees cel. Nice thing is, you are making lots of $$$$ and staying in shape, walking 300 kms pushing a lawnmower, all the while thinking about new coins to get from upcoming auctions. Life is grand
Atlanta called it a snowpocalypse when we got 6” and caused all of Atlanta to gridlock for over 12 hours, stranding many motorists and schoolchildren overnight. Not to mention the thousands of damaged and abandoned cars littering the highways. I fortunately went home early before the traffic started and found that school was cancelled for several days. Atlanta drivers are some of the worst.
That’s amazing, @Macromius ! That really takes me back to a blizzard in Boston during the last century. I was snowed in for 3 weeks. All that I had to eat in my apartment was rice and ketchup. Thank goodness I had plenty of coffee. I was and still am a caffeine addict Stock photo
One of my favorite sellers. I ordered a coin from him a week ago and got a notice today that he just got it in the mail. Privately I was a little disappointed that it took a week to post because I'm really eager to get the coin. But since learning these circumstances, it was probably some blizzard heroics to get the coin out this fast! "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these numismatists from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."
Glad to hear that Steve is alright! I had no idea that Newfies were representing the ancient coin hobby. Proper ting! Erin
Heard from Steve earlier this week after I wrote to tell him a sestertius of Marcus Aurelius had arrived in the mail.
Exactly what came to my mind, too. I was fortunate to have worked from home that day; my wife's aunt didn't get home until 13 hours later. I walked up to the main road to take a look at things, and it was like a scene from a zombie movie - dozens of cars just abandoned on the side of the road, because of a few inches of snow. Glad Steve is safe, and hopefully he'll make it all the way through without losing his power or heat!
Yeah, right. Put 6" of snow on Atlanta highways, and you get gridlock. Philadelphia and Harrisburg sneer at you. Put two feet of snow on Philadelphia or Harrisburg highways, and you get gridlock. Buffalo sneers at you. Put six feet of snow on Buffalo, and you get gridlock. The rest of the US sneers at you, because why would anyone decide it was a good idea to live where things like that happen? Put a tenth of an inch of rain on LA highways, and you get gridlock. Everyone sneers. News flash: unfamiliar road conditions cause traffic problems, everywhere. Even in places that get snow every year, the first snow is usually extra-special for traffic. Still no explanation for Boston drivers, though...
