I am trying to learn my ancient coins. I am attaching a coin with my research finding to see if I am on the right track. If some of you could tell me how I am doing it would be appreciated.
I say this is Type 61 AE 2, AE 3 ARL and that is as far as I can get.

It's Valentinian II. You can read the obverse legend.. "DN VALENTI......PF AVG"

I can't read the mint mark in these photos... but it wouldn't be ARL. I'm thinking it's SM, A or H or N, something. If you got to the linked VOT spreadsheet at this link: http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm

...you can sort for the Valentinian II coins on the VOT X tab. Then you'll see the mint mark options for this coin.

Welcome to the hobby Inspector43. I'd love to hear what you're struggling with as a newcomer to ancients. Is it very difficult to id, not fun, find it too expensive, not enough of this or too much of that?

Having been focusing on Roman coins (imperials to be specific) for some twenty years now I've lost the perspective of what it feels like to be new at this and want information but really not knowing where to start. So maybe if I knew the negatives I could point you in the right direction.

Years ago I made a database to help id coins which you can find on link http://dirtyoldbooks.com/roman/Roman-Emperors.html it's a little more user friendly than Wildwinds. You can just look at the coins to see which one is closest if nothing else. If you give up - as you can see - there's always a bunch of other guys and gals ready to help you out :- )

Thanks a bunch Rasiel. The database looks great.

I am starting to sort through my ancient Roman coins. And, I am looking to add more as I become more familiar with them. I will use the site for a couple of days and get familiar with it first. Then I will probably have several questions. I am in my upper 70's and am almost finished organizing my 71 year collection of US coins. I need a new project so I will work on the Romans I have.

    Thanks again,

    David
