1 Cent. It’s a copper cent that has post mint damage (PMD) and appears to have been heated.

You can do another picture but it won't change that what @Danomite said is correct. Your coin is damaged.

Folks new to the hobby are sometimes drawn to it by a single, funny looking coin. Sometimes it's an IHC received in change; looks foreign or different until they read the details and begin to ask themselves questions. Other times, its a badly treated coin that catches their attention. How did it happen? All fair questions, so exploring it without the perfect jargon usually ensues. Familiar terms, like post mint damage to a noncollector, first time member may not trigger the response it would with us regulars. When the noise overrides the response, it may lead to another question...another picture...something else. It's bound to happen so I've come to expect it. Like pressing the on/off button on a flashlight with a burnt out bulb. Pressing it harder won't make the light come on...but we've all done it.

@Scotty Hankins Keep in mind that this is a family friendly environment. I understand your frustration but I suggest taking the high road.

I see this type of damage to cents all the time. People put them in their battery cable ends to tighten them up. After awhile, they get loose ( usually because the cable end is cracked) and they arc causing what you see. Sometimes they are black or they may have melted lead or steel attached to the surface. By the pattern on your coin it appears to have been on an import vehicle. Sometimes folks bend them to fit around the battery terminal but usually they just shove them in.

Trust me...what you are describing has happened to everyone in this thread...and all of CT. It happens. What we can do individually is decide to let little things pass without comment. It won't always happen, but the fewer times we react to the small stuff the better. Besides, there are plenty of members, including some who have bad days, willing to answer your questions. Stay engaged in the hobby and do your studying. Reading for knowledge and information is powerful stuff and will help shape your questions.

Maybe we need to change the “What’s it worth forum” to the “Beginners Forum”. So people are all a little more understanding of everyone’s situation. Just a thought.

As previously stated, it's damaged and worth one cent.

It does happen however it shouldn't. Instead of answers that will do him no good with only 1 or 2 posts to his name, guide him in the right direction and take the time to answer his questions. If its redundant, push him in the right direction. He obviously posted his entire question in the header so that's very leading. Short header, post the question in the body. Take very good photos, there are many threads here that can teach you about that or just ask. Check this site out The Lincoln Cent Resource, Wexler's Coins and Die, Machine Doubling, Machine Doubling and buy yourself a red book! Learning is the best thing you can do!
