Panoma Coin

Can someone help me identify this coin. How do I know its currency denomination. I like the way it looks though. PRETTY COIN IN MY EYES

It is a 1982 1/4 Balboa from Panama.

See the words VN CVARTO on the Obverse side?
Thats means Un Cuarto.. One Quarter
They just use the letter V instead of a U.

Another tip: Panama's coins are identical in composition and value to US ones.

 

Their silver coinage changed from .900 to .925 in the 1970s - US .900 silver business strike coins ended in 1964.

That's because until some time in the 70's (I believe, might have been early 80's), when it became an independent nation, it was a "colonial" holding of the US, similar to The Philippines, Guam, Marshall Islands, etc. Panama which had originally been a part of Colombia was "calved-off" in a leveraged deal in order for the US to have a firm grasp on the land on which the highly strategic, revolutionary and valuable Panama Canal was constructed.

 

I'd like to show my Un Balboa. Took me a while to find it.
