I was scrolling the bay a few days ago and came across this. As I like world coin/token errors this caught my eye. I am watching this and may make an offer. Still undecided. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1833-CANAD...rentrq:8c9c52e916f0a9e0c7278c9ffffabbd6|iid:1 Is this considered a bad planchet? I have seen a lot of bad planchet errors that have craters and missing chunks but never one like this. I do not think that everything that is going on is due to the planchet, like the rim ding. Now if this is a bad planchet or some other error could this also be why the strike looks weak? Or is this just from wear? Thanks...Mont.
People answered you on a different site earlier. There's inherent weak strikes with the tokens and this has PMD as well. Hard to tell about the planchet unless seen in-hand. https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=364517
I know that, but as you can see that answers weren't that convincing. One said he wouldn't buy it, one said he wasn't sure but would buy it to study, and one said it looked like a faulty planchet. There are a few other error collectors here that I thought maybe had a more definitive answer.
The seller made me a lower offer on the coin and this offer was ending soon. This is why I was asking for a couple more opinions. I decided to take them up on the offer and risk it. It will be interesting to see what this looks like in hand.
Well, judging by the final sale price, you ain't out a whole lot of money. Especially if it's something that you love and enjoy.......
It has arrived. Unfortunately my Canon camera broke and my wife's tablet is too old to take good photos with. I REALLY wish I had one for this to give ya'll better shots of the "gouges" on it. I will say that I am even more convinced this is a bad planchet error. There are no tool marks on the coin and no raised metal on the edges of the gouges. The details of the token flow unbroken right through the gouges. If the gouges had been made by a tool of some sort after the strike it would've wiped out the design I would think. As a bonus it also has a lot of luster left and still looks red. Kinda looks like this has been in a collection for quite some time. It is cleaner looking than the sellers photos show.
Actually nope. Do have several loupes but no Cellphone. Cellphones do not work to well enough here and we do not travel enough to get one. We still have land line service and DSL for internet. My son will be visiting next week maybe I can try using his cellphone.
