Well I just looked at it and at $232.50 it's going at about 2x-melt, give or take. I've got some of these in a safe deposit box someplace (I'm actually unsure of the bank right now, but they're 5s, & 10s), and I really like them. Can't grade this one for you, though, don't know how, but if you can trust the slab on that, I don't think that's too unreasonable a bid. Now if you're looking to "steal" one, I'd think you'd want to pass, here. But just my humble opinion, now. Good luck.

Jack those coins are as common as dirt. Even with higher grades - 66, 67 - I'd never pay much over melt.

Yep, we are just watching and learning. The wife did get a cpl Mexican 2 1/2 pesos at melt yesterday, then , as you would expect, gold dropped, lol.

I won;t be ready to really buy untill I learn alot more, and yes, I did buy the book first.

Russian coins intrigue me, but I think I will start off with a Mexican type set, that 50 pesos is a good looking coin and trades at melt most the time.

Believe it or not, I find the artwork of world coins far superior to MOST of our coinage, with the exception of the Standing Lib quarter, IMO the most beautiful USA coin out there.

And I'll try to make headway into Mexican coinage. You have to start somewhere, and my geographical location is ideal, a cpl stores here carry it and know it well enough to answer my questions

Lincolns are my bread and butter as a wheeler dealer, but i have taken my set as far as I care to, every issue in AU and beautiful. Time to persue something new. Indian Cents and world gold is that something new.

    Hey Jack,

IDK anything about this coin but if Doug and Spock says not to buy I wouldn't.

If you are looking for ancient world gold, I have a few gold fanams (small India gold coins- like .5 grams of gold in a coin)..I have two of them both in EF condition.

If you want one, I will send you one in your next package of Detroit goodies

just let me know and it is yours

I'm sure that's sound advice. Tell you what confuses me, though. Here’s another auction going on right now on some of these, and none of the coins have been pro-graded/certified/slabbed, nor are any likely to end up selling at just over melt: http://russian.coins.imusthave.ca/. I guess what I'm needing to know is, where do you suggest we do our buying?

Someplace other than ebay. If you haven't noticed it you should have - but people on ebay are often paying stupid money for coins that they know absolutely nothing about. I've posted about this before - just because something sells for outrageous money on ebay does not mean that the coin is worth that much. It merely means that somebody with little or no knowledge is buying a coin and paying stupid money for it.

You guys see it all the time when you make posts about some ebay buyer paying an outrageous price for a coin that YOU know is a fake. Well, the same thing happens with genuine coins, only it happens more often with genuine coins. In both cases the buyer is paying for something he obviously knows nothing about or else he wouldn't be doing it.

I hear you. But if your ceiling on these is just over melt, think about it, where are you going to get that? Just take this auction, for example. This coin sold at just under $300. Melt on it, let's round it, $100. These "bullion investors" are buying on the come, anyway, expecting the price of gold to go up. But even in a reputable coin auction (if, indeed, there even is such a thing), how are you going to get one of these at $125/150? All wrapped up, graded, certified, and slabbed? And then, doesn't the date make any difference on these? Or, rather, are they all that lacking in numismatic value?

I know these are hard questions, but I wouldn't ask them to just anybody, and I'm sure (hope?) you know that. But I go in with a ceiling 50% over melt (which would be "generous," right?), and I don't see me going home with anything.

Just don't see anywhere I can get one of these at that price... :(

russian coins cannot be gotten for melt most of the time. BRIC countries are doing well and their coins are gettign very expensive. You can pretty much throw the KM pricing away for those. what you can do is look for a great deal on those that will allow you to get them for around melt but that will require a lot of patience but it will not happen most of the time for the simple reason that there are people who will pay more for the coin it doesnt matter if the coin is not valued as high (catalog)

You have to get the idea of only buying from auction sites like ebat out of your head. You are right, you are not going to get these coins from sites like - at least not very often. Why ? Well, like I said before - because people are paying stupid money for these coins on those sites.

And it's not because they think the price of gold is going up. Who in their right mind is going to pay 3 times the current price of gold because they think the price of gold is going up ? You can go buy gold for spot plus 10% all day long.

These people buy these coins at these outrageous premiums because they think the coins have a numismatic premium - one because they are Russian and two because of the grade. But these coins DO NOT have a numismatic premium. As I said, they are as common as dirt in almost any grade.

If you want to buy these coins, you go to a coin dealer. Dealers will sell these coins for slightly over melt as fast as they can get them. Why ? Because they know that anyone in their right mind, anyone who actually knows anything about world gold, will not pay more than that.

The people paying these prices are just like those on ebay buying the fake coins for outrageous prices. There is no difference between them. They are literally giving their money away because they don't have the sense not to do so.
