This denarius was issued about 250 years earlier, the first to show the legionary eagle (aquila) and standards as the main design element. This design influenced later issues, including Cn. Nerius and the legionary series of Mark Antony.

This Papius has everything I wanted in a coin except for the weight adjustment gouge that ruined the face. Oh, well!

This coin from Spink Auction was graded FDC
but the guys at the Basel Mint struck all of these 1653 AV Dukats with weak reverse legend . Had the rev. been struck with proper die...it would be a perfect coin.

Holed, cracked, green encrustations, worn, part legend BUT this was the first of my Legionary denarii and I was then proud to recognize it as LEG XXII PRI which is the most rare one of the series. I have upgraded it but this one is in my long term collection.

It is extremely unusual that the title CAESAR is shown on the right side of the head. 99% of the coins reads: CAE-SAR. Antoninus Pius as Caesar under Hadrian: IMP T AELIVS - CAESAR ANTONINVS, draped bust right. TRIB - POT CO-S around, PIE - TAS / S - C in the fields. RIC Hadr. 1083 (my 17th example) III Antoninus Pius H1082 PIE-TAS left.jpg

This is the most worn but still identifiable coin in my collection. The ID is made by recognizing the portrait as belonging to Julia Domna and corn ears and long torch as belonging to Ceres.
