I don't know if this person is off their rocker telling me they have half dollar with a misspelling... Before I waste any time trying to meet this person, can the community help me with some resources? Is there a common error database where I can see if there are any known misspelled errors on Barber/Walkers/Franklins/Kennedy halves? In addition to looking through this database myself (if it exists) can any error experts share if you are aware of any known misspelled half dollars? I'm thinking rather than a misspelling it could be a coin struck multiple times that makes one letter look like another one or perhaps it is just post mint damaged inflicted intentionally (or accidentally). Thanks for the help!
I'm not familiar enough with all the different early halves, but could any of them have the word TRUST on them spelled similiarly to the Peace Dollar as TRVST
Chris wrote what I was thinking right off the bat. In this day and age, if there is no photo, then it doesnt exist. How many "PMD" coins have we seen that spell just about anything you can imagine. I am probably wrong but how many mis-spellings truly exist on a modern coin? It almost seems impossible.
Is it truley TRVST or TRUST and people see what they want? Like IBERTY and RUST and all the endless versions.
TRVST on the Peace dollar (and SLQ) is a "classical" affectation. U and V were both written as "V" until the middle ages. I don't think any regular-issue half dollars would have used the V. I'm not up on all the many commemoratives, so I don't know if one might have slipped in somewhere.
What I think is, If it was done by the mint then any misspelling would be adding or subtracting a letter that is supposed to be there.. I dont think they can add another letter or change an A, B, or C into an X, Y, Z. So anything with a letter out of the ordinary then Its most likely not worth anything
TRVST is the Latin spelling of TRUST. The coins were deliberately printed with the Latin version so it's not a misprint.
